California Water Commission to consider MWELO amendments
The next meeting of the California Water Commission will be Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Sacramento. The agenda includes an action item on the proposed amendments to the regulations for the Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO). Commissioners will also receive an overview of the restoration actions of the Salton Sea Management Program and a briefing on two of the goals in the State Water Project Strategic Plan.
Forest restoration study looks at cost-ratio benefits
An analysis of the benefits from different types of forest restoration has been released by the Ecological Restoration Institute (ERI). The report determined cost-ratio benefits after looking at 160 documented observations of forest restoration efforts, including fuel treatments, such as thinning and prescribed burning. The ERI also released a fact sheet on the findings.
UC Davis symposium tackles challenges facing salt lakes
The challenges faced by terminal salt lakes will be discussed during a UC Davis School of Law symposium on Friday, Sept. 20. The sessions will cover a variety of topics, including air quality, endangered species, migratory birds, human health, environmental justice, and Tribal impacts. The symposium will be in-person with remote attendance options.

Blog traces the evolution of the water data community
A recent blog from the Internet of Water Coalition covers the evolution of the water data community through the eyes of someone who has been following it every step of the way. Sara Larsen is the associate director of Internet of Water Services. Twelve years ago she heard about the Western States Water Council’s Water Data Exchange Program. The blog discusses the work she and colleagues have done since then and the changes she has seen in the sharing of water data.

Irrigation and drainage conferences to be held in Sacramento
Under the theme of “Implementing Sustainable Water Management,” the U.S. Committee on Irrigation and Drainage will hold its annual conference on Oct. 1–4, in Sacramento. In addition to daily sessions and exhibits, the conference offers a forum for water district staff, water agency staff, irrigation and drainage specialists, consultants, and academics to share solutions and experiences. There will also be field tours to the Solano Irrigation District and to Oroville Dam.
Pesticide Registration Evaluation Model, Version 6 put into use
A new version of the Pesticide Registration Evaluation Model (PREM) is now being used by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. PREM is used to evaluate aquatic impacts of pesticide products submitted to California for registration. Version 6 has several new capabilities, including new pesticide simulation models.
Project WET co-hosting webinar for California teachers
A workshop to provide teachers with information on the science of climate change and the connection to California’s water resources will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, in Fremont. Sponsored by DWR, Alameda County Water District, and Project Water Education for Teachers (Project WET), the workshop will include activities to help students understand the links between climate change and water. Project WET activities are designed to engage students in the study of water.
