State Parks releases holiday safety message for California boaters
With Labor Day weekend approaching, the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is reminding boaters to make safety a priority while enjoying the state’s waterways. DWB is also taking the opportunity to remind boaters that, beginning Jan. 1, all operators of motorized vessels, including personal watercraft, will be required to carry a State-issued boater card while on the water. Completion of a safety course is required to obtain a card.

UC Davis conference will look at the first 10 years of SGMA
The status of California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) will be discussed during a day-long conference at the UC Davis School of Law on Friday, Sept. 6. The conference will consider how effectively SGMA has been implemented in the 10 years since it was signed by Governor Jerry Brown. The agenda includes SGMA case studies, a briefing on California groundwater law, and a keynote address by DWR Director Karla Nemeth.
"Recharging California" fall webinar series begins next week
Sustainable Conservation's fall webinar series begins Wednesday, Sept. 4. This season’s theme is “Recharging California.” It will feature experts who will provide explanations that take some of the mystery out of the effects of climate change in California. The first webinar will focus on water management and strategies to improve drought and flood resilience.

Giving canals a new look to save water and generate electricity
To reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation, a growing number of water managers in western states want to install solar-paneled canopies over canals and floating solar panels on reservoirs. The idea is discussed in a new article from the Water Education Foundation. Several pilots projects are underway to demonstrate whether the benefits justify the costs
Operation plan for Delta Conveyance Project released by DWR
DWR has released information on the way it will operate the planned Delta conveyance. The Delta Conveyance Project (DCP) Operations Plan focuses on how the DCP will be operated after construction. The report consolidates operations information that has previously been released in several public documents. It was also prepared to assist the public in better understanding how the new north Delta intakes will be integrated with State Water Project operations while remaining consistent with laws, permit conditions, and regulatory obligations.

Agricultural conference on California water users coexisting
An agricultural summit to explore the coexistence of California’s water users will be held in Fresno on Wednesday, Sept. 4. California Natural Resources Agency Secretary Wade Crowfoot will be among the speakers during the day-long event which will include sessions on water data and building alliances among water groups. The conference, sponsored by The Maddy Institute in partnership with the California Water Institute, will have in-person and virtual attendance options.
