The Splash is a weekly feature spotlighting topics from California Water Plan Update 2023.
California Water Plan Update 2023’s Roadmap to Resilience Objective 5 is: Support and Learn from Tribal Water and Resource Management Practices.
While California Tribes have a long history of sustainable water and resource management practices, Tribal communities face water management challenges related to water rights, infrastructure development, engagement, and Tribal direct funding. To address these challenges and learn from Tribal water management practices, the recommendations are:
- Strengthen partnerships with California Tribes that acknowledge and respect their sovereign authority and ensure that Tribes are included in planning and water resources decision-making processes, consistent with their sovereign status.
- Collaborate with Tribes to incorporate Indigenous Knowledge (or Tribal Ecological Knowledge) into California water policy, planning, and projects.
- Collaborate to further understand Tribal water quality, ecosystems, and access to water, to support Tribal lifeways including subsistence and cultural practices.
The recommendations come with 12 actions to implement, including educating water managers regarding Tribal perspectives and resources, providing staff training to increase awareness about California Tribes, supporting Tribal climate change research, and continuing co-management agreements with Tribes..
