The idea of using nature-based solutions to increase landscape resilience will be discussed during today’s Lunch-MAR webinar sponsored by the Flood-Managed Aquifer Recharge (Flood-MAR) Network. The presentation will cover opportunities, challenges, and case examples from around the world on the use of nature-based solutions. The webinar begins this afternoon, June 5, at 12:30.
Engineering With Nature releases volume 3 of atlas series
The newest volume of the Engineering With Nature (EWN): An Atlas, spotlights projects harnessing the power of nature-based solutions. Volume 3 provides a variety of case studies, methodologies, and success stories from around the world that illustrate the benefits of EWN. The projects employ the essential elements of EWN, including using science and engineering to produce operational efficiencies, and using natural processes to maximize benefits.

International groundwater conference registration closes Friday
Registration closes this Friday, June 7, for an international groundwater conference in San Francisco. “Toward Sustainable Groundwater in Agriculture — Linking Science and Policy" will run June 17–20. The program will cover a wide range of topics related to sustainable management of food production and groundwater resources of agricultural regions.
Presentation and discussion on SJ Valley groundwater recharge
The progress of groundwater recharge in the San Joaquin Valley will be discussed during a virtual event sponsored by the Public Policy Institute of California on Tuesday, June 11. There will be a presentation on the results of a survey that asked water managers about groundwater recharge efforts. It will be followed by a panel discussion that will include DWR Director Karla Nemeth.
Groundwater Accounting Platform expanding use, availability
The Groundwater Accounting Platform is gaining popularity among water managers as a data-driven tool to help track water availability. The platform is now available throughout California and is ready for adoption and use by groundwater sustainability agencies across the state. The platform integrates data from various sources and generates information that enables precise tracking of water budgets.

Annual report celebrates 35 years of work by CCST
The California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) has released its annual report. Not only does the report cover the effort and accomplishments during 2023, it looks at the work done by CCST during the first 35 years of its existence. The council was created by the Legislature in 1988 to bring science and technology into California’s research and policy processes.

The Splash is a weekly feature spotlighting topics from California Water Plan Update 2023.
The California Water Plan Update 2023 Roadmap to Resilience, Objective 1 is: Support Watershed Resilience Planning and Implementation. Climate change challenges will worsen with time. For watersheds to be prepared, the recommendations are:
- Improve State agency alignment for watershed resilience.
- Establish a watershed resilience program.
- Support long-term sustainability for critically challenged regions.
- Expand and improve monitoring, reporting, data, and decision-support tools.
From these recommendations there are seven actions for implementation, including improve Water Plan data and analytical tools, explore developing watershed data and performance tracking hub, and identifying regions of the state with high climate vulnerabilities and preparedness challenges.
