Governor Appoints Delta Leadership Program Alum
Meghan Hertel, an alum of the inaugural class of the Delta Leadership Program, was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom as Deputy Secretary of Biodiversity and Habitat at the California Natural Resources Agency on Jan. 18.
Hertel came to the DLP – a joint program of the Delta Protection Commission and the Delta Leadership Foundation – in 2016 while employed by Audubon California. There, she led its Working Lands Team, which partnered with landowners, agencies and industry to increase bird-friendly management and habitat restoration on farms, ranches and wetlands throughout the Central Valley.
She has been North American Director for Land Life Company since 2022.

Delta Agency Annual Reports Released
The Delta Protection Commission approved its 2023 Annual Report on Jan. 18. The report highlights the Commission’s work on land use, water, the regional economy, recreation and tourism, heritage, outreach and education, and leadership and development.
It includes a summary of letters written to planning agencies about land-use proposals to ensure consistency with the Commission’s Land Use and Resource Management Plan (LURMP) – part of the Commission’s statutory authority.

Two other Delta agencies released their annual reports as well: The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy and the Delta Stewardship Council.
Conservancy: Fishing Dock Grant Approved
The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy Board approved a $715,000 grant last week for construction of a public fishing dock in Suisun City. The dock will be Americans with Disabilities Act accessible and feature benches, shade, fishing pole holders, and an educational kiosk.
“The fishing dock project will provide an updated, inclusive recreation space that will be a tourist attraction regionally and will highlight the Delta’s beautiful and unique ecosystem,” said Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez.
Rio Vista Pedestrian Improvement Project Begins
The City of Rio Vista is making pedestrian improvements at 14 locations starting Feb. 5. The project is funded by a grant and will include striping improvements and curb ramp construction.
Traffic controls will be in place and motorists are advised to travel slowly in construction areas.
OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DELTA
Opening: Tribal Representative on Delta Protection Advisory Committee
Applications for a tribal representative on the Delta Protection Advisory Committee will be accepted until the position is filled.
The committee, which meets in the evening every other month at locations in the Delta, advises the Commission on diverse interests in the Delta. The new member will serve a term that expires in 2027.
This position was added by the Delta Protection Commission in September, when it voted to expand DPAC, adding seats for a tribal representative and an additional general-public representative.
