Water commission approves white paper on drought strategies
The California Water Commission has approved a white paper outlining four strategies to protect communities, fish, and wildlife in the event of drought. The list of strategies includes a scale-up of groundwater recharge, which is seen as a key element of dealing with a hotter, drier future. Details are available in this news release.
Groundwater Resources Association hosting water symposium
A one-day symposium on "The Future of Water" will be hosted by the Groundwater Resources Association of California on Friday, Feb. 23, in Sacramento. Panel discussions will cover a variety of topics, including artificial intelligence, climate change, and Tribal Ecological Knowledge. All sessions and panel discussions will include question-and-answer sessions. Discount registration rates will be available through Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Post-fire forest resilience workshops begin next week
Owners of forest land affected by recent fires in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties are invited to a post-fire forest resilience workshop. It is being hosted by the UC Post-Fire Forest Resilience Team and will be held on Tuesday evenings from Jan. 31 through March 12. Landowners will be connected to information, and resources to help them manage their land post-wildfire.
California Water Data Consortium releases year in review report
A recap of last year’s efforts by the California Water Data Consortium is available in the new Year in Review: 2023. The consortium’s efforts are aimed at promoting and designing new ways to share data. The report covers a list of developments and accomplishments, including progress on the consortium’s Groundwater Accounting Platform, Urban Water Reporting Project, and the Telemetered Water Data Project.

Science and Technology week kicks off Feb. 5, in Sacramento
The California Council on Science & Technology (CCST) will be celebrating Science and Technology Week Feb. 5-8, in Sacramento. The event will mark 35 years of the CCST delivering a variety of science services to policymakers in California. The agenda includes a panel discussion on the potential of artificial intelligence technology to mitigate the effect of disasters in the context of California’s unique challenges.
