Government releases Fifth National Climate Assessment
The federal government has released its preeminent report on climate change impacts, risks, and responses. The Fifth National Climate Assessment is designed to help with understanding, predicting, and responding to climate change. The assessment includes regional reports. It notes the southwest region, which includes California, is getting drier, and that shrinking water supplies pose a number of risks to human health throughout the region.

Seminar to provide overview of "Weather Generator" tool
DWR will host a seminar on Tuesday, Dec. 12, to provide an overview of a new “Weather Generator” tool. The tool is designed to help water resources managers prepare for the effects of climate change. Information generated by the tool can be used to identify vulnerabilities in water resource systems. The seminar will be in Sacramento; an online option will be available.
Comments being accepted on proposed MWELO revisions
Public comments are being accepted on proposed revisions to the Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO). MWELO provides a standard for the design, management, and maintenance of landscapes to use water efficiently. The proposed changes are intended to provide clarity and reduce ambiguities in the ordinance. A public hearing will be held Tuesday, Jan. 9, in Sacramento. Details are available in this public notice. The comment period runs through Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Webinar series will relaunch Water-Energy Nexus Registry
The Climate Registry is hosting a series of webinars to relaunch the Water-Energy Nexus Registry. The series will begin Thursday, Dec. 7 with a panel of water agency representatives offering their perspective on the latest water-related emissions guidance and best practices. The registry provides tools to track the relationship between water use and GHG emissions; and provides comprehensive consulting, training, and data collection support.

State library to host California Environmental Heritage webinar
Join the California State Library on Wednesday, Dec. 6, for the webinar, California’s Environmental Heritage. It is an opportunity to explore California at a time when there were no dams or freeways. The presentations will include the effect of land and water management policy through the lens of Indigenous perspectives.

The fall issue of Sustainable Conservation’s Thrive California newsletter offers details on the group’s climate-modeling watershed work with State agencies, and its efforts to accelerate habitat restoration. There is also an article on a Sustainable Conservation program that is investigating how healthy soils can boost water resilience.
