Update 2023 Public Review Draft released for comment today
This morning, the public review draft for California Water Plan Update 2023 (Update 2023) was released by DWR and made available for comment. The reviewer’s guide has information on the options for submitting comments, including the online comment form. Update 2023 is the State’s latest strategic plan for sustainably and equitably managing and developing water resources. The central themes of the plan include climate urgency, watershed resilience, and water equity. The comment period runs through Thursday, Oct. 19.
Free in-person attendance at Update 2023 Plenary Meeting
DWR has released the latest agenda for the Update 2023 plenary meeting, including breakout sessions, regional summaries poster session, Tribal and equity panel discussions, premiere of a film marking the 20th anniversary of integrated regional water management, and the debut of the Watershed Resilience Program. The two-day event will be Oct. 3 and 4, at the Roebbelen Center in Roseville. There is no fee for in-person or virtual plenary meeting attendance. Registration is required because of limited seating. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about, and provide feedback on, the public review draft of Update 2023 that was released today. The final Update 2023 will be released at the end of the year.

$187 million awarded to sustainable groundwater projects
DWR’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Grant Program has awarded more than $187 million to enhance groundwater monitoring, water use efficiency, groundwater recharge, recycled water, and water quality. The funding will go to 103 projects in 32 groundwater subbasins throughout the state. More than $160 million in grants will directly benefit Tribes and underrepresented communities.
Study examines link between forest health and human health
A briefing on the new report, The Human Health Benefits of Improving Forest Health in California, will be held tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 21. Hosted by The California Council on Science & Technology and Blue Forest, the briefing will provide an overview of the reports the report findings, conclusions, and recommendations. One finding shows that improving forest health can reduce the risk of wildfires and benefit human health.
Funding available for public boating education classes
The California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is accepting grant applications from organizations that teach on-the-water boating safety education to the public. A total of $1.6 million in funding is available to local public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and colleges. Applications must be submitted through DBW’s online grant application system. The application deadline is Thursday, Oct. 26, at noon.
