Remembering Delta icon Matt Hemly
The Delta Protection Commission joins in the mourning of sixth-generation Courtland pear farmer Matt Hemly, who perished on July 23 when he was overcome by fumes from a toxic ammonia leak in the Greene & Hemly orchard's cold storage facility. He was 47.
Hemly was an alumni of the 2017 class of the Delta Leadership Program, a joint effort of the Delta Protection Commission and the Delta Leadership Foundation, designed to foster the next generation of leaders.
At the time Hemly applied for the program, his parents had stepped back from farm operations, and he and his sister Virginia had stepped into the leadership roles.
"He cared very much about his own community, and his family was very deeply tied to that community, but he had a broader caring for the Delta community as well," recalled Erik Vink, former executive director of the Commission and current secretary of the Foundation.
"Most of my interactions with him subsequent to the Delta Leadership Program involved activities outside of his own community and outside of the pear-growing community," Vink said. "That was indicative of his commitment to the broader Delta community."
