EPA environmental justice webinars for Tribes begins May 24
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s webinar series on environmental justice for Tribes and Indigenous peoples will begin Wednesday, May 24. The first session will cover financial and technical resources that are available to Tribes and others. There will also be information on the experiences of an indigenous organization working to address environmental and human health issues in their communities.
Listening sessions on Central Valley extreme heat set for today
The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research’s series of hearing sessions on extreme heat continues today, May 17, at noon. Today's focus will be on the Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley regions. Five more sessions on other California regions are scheduled through June 8. New California biodiversity atlas released by CDFW
The new Atlas of the Biodiversity of California has been released by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). This is the second edition of the atlas. It features maps, photographs, and illustrations that depict the state’s diversity of plant and animal species. There is also a collection of articles that cover an array of topics, including restoration strategies and species protection. The first edition of the atlas was published almost 20 years ago. Sample pages from that edition are available on the atlas website.

Data for Lunch offers info on streamflow predictions
Applying data science to water management decisions will be the topic of the California Water Data Consortium’s next Data for Lunch event. The presentation will include results from machine learning pipeline that converts monthly precipitation and temperature data into streamflow predictions for more than 95 percent of California rivers. The noontime event will be Tuesday, May 23.
AWE looking for partners in water research projects
The Alliance for Water Efficiency is looking for participants in three multi-agency research projects. The projects cover the use of advanced metering infrastructure, large-scale landscape irrigation strategies, and evaluating changes in peak water demand. Details are available in the video of a webinar held in March.
Updated fact sheets on California water use released by PPIC
The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) has released an updated version of its fact sheet on water use in California. It provides a snapshot of where, and how, water is used in the state. This version includes additional fact sheets that provide closer looks at water use in three specific sectors: communities, agriculture, and the environment.
CDFW announces $36 million for salmon habitat projects
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced almost $36 million in funding for projects that benefit salmon and their habitats. The bulk of the funding ($20 million) is going to projects that improve salmon habitat in the Shasta and Scott rivers and their watersheds. The remaining funding will be distributed among projects that support nature-based solutions, climate resiliency, wildlife corridors, and wetlands restoration.
