Update 2023 sets workshop date for draft desalination RMS
On Thursday, May 18, the California Water Plan team will host a virtual workshop to get public input on the draft Desalination -Brackish and Sea Water Resource Management Strategy (RMS) for California Water Plan Update 2023. The workshop will give local agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the public an opportunity to review and provide comment on the content in the draft Desalination RMS. An agenda and draft for review will be sent to those who complete the registration form.

Fish and Wildlife, Wintu Tribe reach salmon agreement
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries, and the Winnemem Wintu Tribe have signed agreements to restore Chinook salmon to the rivers in the mountains north of Redding. The agreements support an effort to return Chinook salmon to their original spawning areas in rivers blocked by Shasta Reservoir. An intended outcome of the restoration is renewed fishing opportunities for the Tribe.
DWR launches emergency effort to avoid Central Valley flooding
DWR is implementing an emergency program to divert potential flood waters away from Central Valley communities and into groundwater recharge basins. DWR is working with local agencies and to provide temporary diversion equipment, including pumps, that could divert 55,000 acre-feet of water over the next four months. The pumps will divert water away from the flood-prone Tulare Lake basin and into open lands where flood-managed aquifer recharge (Flood-MAR) techniques can be used to help replenish depleted groundwater basins.

UPWARD water rights project announced by State Water Board
State Water Board is launching a new project called Updating Water Rights Data for California (UPWARD). It is designed to improve the way the State collects and manages water rights that are critical for data-driven water management decisions. A webinar will be held Friday, May 19, to provide an update on the UPWARD project and details about the formation of the UPWARD advisory group.
Workshop will cover status of Salton Sea Management Program
The State Water Resources Control Board will host a two-day workshop on May 16 and 17, in Imperial, to discuss the status of the Salton Sea Management Program. The California Natural Resources Agency will present a program update to the board. There will be a remote viewing option in the Coachella Valley where comments will be accepted. English and Spanish webcasts will also be available.

Forest Legacy Program to be discussed during May 18 webinar
Information about California’s Forest Legacy Program will be shared during a webinar on Thursday, May 18. The conservation program is administered by CAL FIRE to encourage the protection of privately owned forest land through conservation easements or land purchases. The webinar is related to of the Forest Stewardship Workshop series run by University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.
