March 2023 Training Updates and Reminders
March has brought about a number of collaborative opportunities for the Training Unit. First, the Training Unit has been busy partnering with a number of internal departments, as well as external partners to initiate training plans that will support the needs of our staff. The Training Unit is working in collaboration with Business Services to establish a P-Card training in the training portal. In addition, we enhanced our Upward Mobility Program (UMP) last month and began providing support to a number of qualifying participants. Also, more centers will have access to Chainsaw training through our reestablished partnership with North Zone Fallers. March is concluding with Initial Entry Training (IET) from March 27 through March 30th, hosted at the Placer Center.
The CCC Training Unit has also been busy welcoming 2 new staff members, Patrick Bayquen and Shabi Horne. With our Training Unit now fully established, we are looking forward to serving our CCC staff and meeting all of your training needs.
If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for what else you’d like to see in the Staff Training Bulletin, please email at Training@ccc.ca.gov.

With the fiscal year coming to an end, it's time for many training compliance reminders, including a reminder for all in leadership roles to complete 10 hours of training from the Supervisor and Manager Academy in the training portal. 10 hours of training is required each year for all in leadership roles.
The Supervisor and Manager Academy, in the training portal, is a collection of pre-approved courses that fulfill core competencies from CalHR's Leadership Competency Model. Choosing to complete a total of 10 hours from this curriculum will fulfill the requirement for all leadership staff.
External trainings may also qualify to fulfill 10 hours of leadership development, however the training must align with the Leadership Competency Model. To request approval for an external training, follow these steps:
- Complete this "Petition to Add External Training" Docusign Form
- The Training Unit approves or denies accrual toward Leadership Competency Model hours
- Send certificate or agenda to Training@ccc.ca.gov to receive credit toward the 10 hours in your training portal

Upward Mobility Program (UMP) Updates
The Upward Mobility Program (UMP) is a career mobility program designed to give staff members in qualifying entry-level classifications the tools they need to advance to technical, professional, and administrative roles. CCC qualifying classifications are indicated in the graphic above.
The Training Unit, in partnership with Human Resources and Equal Employment Opportunity staff, were thrilled to enhance UMP last month. We have had had the opportunity to provide information about UMP during the District Directors conference at headquarters. An introduction to UMP was also provided during the Statewide Culinary Call on 3/28.
Currently, we have 2 participants, as well as 2 applications awaiting approval. For more information about the CCC UMP, please visit the UMP SharePoint. If interested in applying for our UMP, please review the handbook and application process. You may also reach out directly to our UMP coordinator, Krista Pohl at krista.pohl@ccc.ca.gov. We are continuing to accept applications! Let's all contribute to recognizing hard-working staff and providing as many opportunities for all in the CCC to reach their highest potential.

Led by the Training Unit, and consisting of Region Deputies and designated managers and supervisors, the Training Committee meets annually to review the fiscal year training plans submitted by headquarters and district staff.
The Training Committee will develop the Department’s Annual Training Plan and post it on the CorpsNet calendar. Training/event information to be calendared includes, but is not limited to, the following courses:
The Annual Training Plan will be completed and distributed at the start of the next fiscal year. The calendar will be updated by the Training Unit as needed. Being transparent about events that impact multiple sites or staff is a priority.
