SANTEE, CA — The East County Advanced Water Purification Program broke ground Wednesday, marking an important milestone for the project, which could purify up to 11.5 million gallons of water per day when it's completed.
Program representatives, elected officials and water industry leaders gathered Wednesday at the future site of the treatment facility in Santee. The project was approved on May 19 by the East County AWP Joint Powers Authority, which owns and operates the program, and is a collaborative partnership between four agencies: Padre Dam, the city of El Cajon, the county of San Diego and the Helix Water District.

CLIMATE & WEATHER

New York CNN — The severe drought in California threatens to significantly undermine the state’s ability to generate hydroelectric power, raising costs for families and driving up planet-warming emissions, according to a federal government forecast.
Assuming drought conditions persist, California’s hydroelectric generation would be 48% less this summer than if water conditions were normal, the US Energy Information Administration said in a blog post on Wednesday.
CALIFORNIA WATERSHEDS
San Francisco Examiner, 5/31/2022
Plans to redevelop the Hunters Point Shipyard, a 638-acre Superfund site on San Francisco’s southeastern shore, have been in the works for decades but have stalled numerous times due to scandal, the continual discovery of toxic materials and years of neglect.
Now, one of the largest redevelopment proposals in San Francisco’s history faces a new threat: climate change. Rising sea levels are poised to seep into groundwater in low-lying areas, including Hunter’s Point, a former Naval shipyard and radiological research laboratory, and turn once-buried chemicals into what environmental activists call “a toxic soup” of mobilized contaminants.
CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES

California’s relentless drought and quickly-melting mountain snow mean that the state has the right conditions for yet another summer of intense wildfires.
A dismal snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, a dry beginning to 2022, a trend of record-breaking heat waves and an earlier snowmelt are all setting the stage for an early wildfire season that promises to bring large, explosive infernos, experts say.
