A comprehensive review of the Delta Monitoring Enterprise
The Delta Independent Science Board has published its review of the monitoring enterprise, which covers the suite of scientific monitoring programs in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The review assessed whether the information collected from monitoring meets the needs of management agencies and whether coordination could be improved to support adaptive management. It provides an Adaptive Management Framework to structure all programs, best practices that should be formally adopted into individual programs, and three overarching recommendations directed at the monitoring enterprise as a whole.
Science for Communities Workshop survey deadline extended
Last month, the Delta Stewardship Council announced a Science for Communities Workshop, which will connect those who live, work, and recreate in and around the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta with scientists who work in the region. In the fall of 2022, the workshop will foster opportunities for communities to contribute to science and for scientists to contribute to communities. As described in the workshop information sheet, the planning committee is seeking community and science partners to assist with planning the agenda. Those interested in becoming a partner should read the information sheet linked above and complete the survey. Survey responses will now be accepted through April 8.
Airborne electromagnetic surveys
The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) will be conducting Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) surveys in multiple locations throughout the Delta. During an AEM survey, a helicopter tows electronic equipment that send signals into the ground which bounce back. The data collected will be used to better understand the underground geology and assist State and local agencies with groundwater management. The survey helicopters will fly about 200 feet above ground and carry the equipment about 100 feet above ground. AEM data will not be collected over urban or residential areas and structures containing people. DWR will be sending letters with more information to landowners beneath the planned flight paths.
Survey Area 6 (Cosumnes, Tracy, Eastern San Joaquin, East Contra Costa, Solano, North and South American River, Yolo, Sutter, North and South Yuba, and Livermore) is scheduled to be overflown from April 3 to April 25.

Delta Governance Webinar Series continues
Join the Delta Science Program for a three-part brown bag webinar series on the complex and multi-faceted governance of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. This series will feature academic scholars, representatives from federal, State, local, and Tribal governments, and representatives of collaborative community partnerships. Each webinar will focus on a different social scientific framework that can be used to understand governance in the Delta. The second of three webinars will take place on April 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and will focus on collaborative governance, highlighting how partnerships and decentralized structures and processes are used by government and non-government actors to influence decision-making. Speakers include Brett Milligan (UC Davis), Andrea Gerlak (University of Arizona), Matthew Moore (United Auburn Indian Community), and Jessica Law (Sacramento Water Forum). Attendance is free with registration.
Delta Science Program's Salinity Management Workshop
This two-day workshop, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 26 and 27, and hosted by the Delta Science Program, will build toward a shared understanding of how salinity management affects different people, industries, and ecological systems in the Delta and is a first step toward identifying knowledge gaps that could be filled with future research and scenario-based modeling.
