Reminder: Learn more about the State Water Board’s upcoming Hearing for the Consideration of a Probationary Designation for the Kaweah Subbasin at two public workshops
This email serves as a reminder that State Water Board staff will host a virtual public workshop on June 24, 2024, and an in-person public workshop on June 27, 2024, in Visalia about possible state intervention in the Kaweah groundwater Subbasin.
The State Water Board will hold a hearing to consider designating the Kaweah Subbasin as a probationary basin under the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA).
If the State Water Board designates the subbasin probationary, it will identify deficiencies (issues) and potential actions that the groundwater sustainability agencies in the basin could take to address the deficiencies. If the basin is designated as probationary, the State Water Board will also identify which groundwater pumpers will need to report their extractions to the State Water Board and pay fees. The State Water Board may also require specific extractors to install and use meters or other methods to measure their groundwater withdrawals. A Draft Staff Report outlining recommendations to the Board is posted on the State Water Board’s website. Comments on the Draft Staff Report must be submitted by July 8, 2024 at 12:00 noon. Staff will consider all comments received by the deadline when developing the final staff report.
Before the probationary hearing, staff will hold two public workshops to explain the Draft Staff Report and share more about how to participate in the State Water Board’s state intervention process. Staff will also accept verbal public comments on the Draft Staff Report at the workshops. Staff will share the same information at both workshops.
