We frequently hear from residents asking how they can become more involved in the City. One of the best ways is to volunteer to serve on a commission, committee or advisory board.
Currently, Walnut Creek has several commission openings. Among those are seats on the Planning Commission, the Library Commission, the Board of Appeals and the Design Review Commission.
We encourage residents to consider applying and serving your community. You can find out more about the openings on the City's website.

City Council Update
The City Council's next meeting is Tuesday, March 4. At that meeting, the City Council will hear an update on the Housing Element, including progress made towards implementing goals and programs. On March 18, the Council will hear a presentation from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
On February 11, the City Council held a special meeting to discuss and set the Council's strategic priorities for 2025 and 2026. The Council updates its priorities every two years, and staff provides progress reports quarterly. The priorities include economic development and downtown vitality, environmental sustainability, public safety and social wellness, and major efforts to enhance our parks and recreation facilities. New for this cycle is to begin work on an update of the City's general plan. You'll be hearing more about that in the coming months.
You are welcome to attend our meetings in person, or watch on Walnut Creek TV, YouTube live, or video on demand through Roku, Amazon Firestick, and Apple TV. Find out more meeting details by visiting our public meetings and agendas webpage.

And there were presentations on new happenings and openings in both Shadelands and downtown Walnut Creek.

New maps released outlining potential fire danger in the Bay Area
Cal Fire has released new maps that identify different levels of fire hazard severity throughout the Bay Area, a practice done every few years. The updated maps are now showing more areas in the moderate, high or very high risk zones. You can zero in on not only Walnut Creek but your specific neighborhood to see what the updated maps show.
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Board will formally approve the map.
With the recent Southern California wildfires still fresh in our minds, knowing the risks in your area and learning what you can do to mitigate those risks is important. The updated maps are on the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District website, and you'll also find an opportunity there to provide your comments about them. Those comments will be submitted to the state Board of Forestry.
