Walnut Creek is lucky to be home to two women who brought home gold medals from the Olympics in Paris. Thank you to the many people who came out to Civic Park last month to celebrate with wrestling gold medalist Amit Elor. It was gratifying to see so many people on hand to hear her story, especially the kids who had a chance to see the medal up close. If you had photos taken with Amit by our photographer, you can view and download them online.
Amit isn't our only superstar from the Olympics. We'll also celebrate the success of WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu later this fall. She's leading the New York Liberty into the playoffs, but we'll reach out to residents when we have our next Olympic heroes event.

City Council Update
The City Council meets twice this month, with the first of those meetings happening tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall.
On this evening's agenda, we will have a proclamation for Pedestrian Safety Month, an issue that the City takes very seriously. Many of you have seen work underway on Locust Street; the purpose is to enhance the safety of sidewalks and corners for pedestrians.
We will also administer the oath of office to three high school students who will be serving advisory roles on three of our City Commissions: Arts, Transportation, and Parks, Recreation and Open Space. We appreciated the interest of Walnut Creek's youths who are interested in serving.
When the Council meets on October 15, the City will welcome student ambassadors from one of our sister cities, and discuss potential updates to our Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) ordinance.
During a special 4:00 p.m. meeting, the Council will review and provide feedback on the design proposed for the new Aquatic and Community Center at Heather Farm Park.
You are welcome to attend our meetings in person, or watch on Walnut Creek TV, YouTube live, or video on demand through Roku, Amazon Firestick, and Apple TV. Find out more meeting details by visiting our public meetings and agendas webpage.
Election season underway: ballots arriving soon
Watch your mailbox next week when vote-by-mail ballots will be sent to all residences in Walnut Creek and throughout the County. While much of the media attention centers around national races, Walnut Creek residents have some important decisions to make that will have a local impact.
Three City Council seats will be on the ballot November 5, with five candidates running for office. The deadline to register to vote is October 21. Walnut Creek will host early voting in person, and will have two secure ballot drop boxes outside of City Hall, plus one at the Ygnacio Valley Library, and one at Grace Presbyterian Church.
Thank you for exercising your right to vote.
Essential Tips for Fire Safety
Despite this week's heatwave, cooler temperatures are on the way, but fire danger remains a concern. Contra Costa Fire is reminding residents to stay prepared for wildfires by maintaining defensible space for homes and businesses, having a “go-bag” with essential items, and signing up for Community Warning System (CWS) alerts at CWSAlerts.com to be notified of wildfires and other emergencies.
In the event of a fall wildfire, Contra Costa Fire has increased firefighting efforts with a seasonal helicopter partnership with PG&E to provide expanded aerial firefighting capabilities for the County. This helicopter can quickly deploy and drop 326 gallons of water, helping to contain and suppress wildfires.
