City Council Update
The City Council will meet on Tuesday, July 18, with several important topics on the agenda. The Council will be considering adoption of an updated Sustainability Action Plan, which will guide the City's efforts to combat climate change through 2045. In addition, the Council will provide input on plans for community engagement relating to the upcoming project to replace the aquatic and community centers at Heather Farm Park
Last month, the Council approved a budget that will guide City spending for the next two years. It is a balanced budget, reflecting that the City's finances are healthy, but not wealthy, and it is aligned with the Council's and community's priorities. This will also be the first budget that will include funds from the voter-approved Measure O, which will help pay for high priority projects and services the City couldn't afford otherwise.
You can view prior meetings and agenda material on the public meetings agendas and videos webpage. As always, we welcome you to attend in person, or watch live on YouTube, Walnut Creek TV, Zoom or on our City website.
Join our Walnut Creek city team
The City of Walnut Creek is busy recruiting for a wide range of positions in many different fields. In 2023 so far, the City has hired 33 employees to fill vacant positions and almost 200 additional part-time seasonal staff. The post-pandemic phenomenon of higher vacancy rates is not unique to the City of Walnut Creek. We’re fortunate to continue to be an employer of choice with a vacancy rate that’s moving in the right direction.
As part of the City’s award-winning employee engagement initiative known as CARE, the City offers compressed work schedules (i.e. 9/80, 4/10) and hybrid remote work opportunities for eligible positions. About half of those full-time employees hired this year are eligible for hybrid work schedules, with the other half having some form of flexible work schedule option. Upcoming recruitments will span across multiple disciplines in Arts and Recreation, Community Development, Police (sworn and professional staff opportunities), and Public Works Departments. If you’re considering a career that makes a direct impact on your community, follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on our hiring news. You'll find more details on our Human Resources Department website.
Walnut Creek Police Department embraces innovative approach to public safety
The Walnut Creek Police Department is proud to have been accepted as an early adopter of ABLE - which stands for Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement, a program developed after years of research at Georgetown University. ABLE's goal is to create a law enforcement culture in which officers routinely intervene if needed to prevent misconduct, avoid police mistakes, and promote officer health and wellness. Significant training will take place to shift the culture to invest in preventing tragedies such as those we've seen in high profile cases. Officers will not only feel empowered to prevent misconduct, but accept intervention when needed. Being an active bystander means it's an officer's duty to prevent harm, and create a culture that supports peer intervention. Training will begin in the fall.
