June 2018

The strength and creativity of our community's younger generation will be on full display on Wednesday, June 27, when the City's Youth Leadership Commission hosts a regional Youth Conference.

"Energize, engage and empower" is the theme of the event that will run from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  Teens can find out about job and volunteer opportunities, register to vote, be inspired by the keynote speaker and our youth panel discussion, and enjoy performances by local bands and dance groups.

If you have teenagers in your home, encourage them to check out the event.  Find out more at the Youth Conference website.

City Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 19: Budget and Marijuana Regulations on the agenda

Join us at City Hall on Tuesday, June 19, at 6:00 p.m., with several important items on the agenda.

The City Council will consider adoption of an operating and capital budget to cover the two fiscal years that begin on July 1.  As always, public input is welcome.

A balanced budget proposal was presented to the City Council on May 15, and we made some adjustments based upon Council direction at that time.  Formal adoption of the budget is expected at the conclusion of the June 19 hearing.

Also on the June 19 agenda will be updated information regarding proposed marijuana regulations in the City.  The Council will consider regulation of personal cultivation of marijuana on residential property, and the prohibition of cannabis operations in the City with certain exceptions.  The exceptions would allow for up to two medical cannabis delivery service businesses located in areas away from schools, youth centers and day care centers.  The Council will also consider the selection process for those businesses, and next steps, including implementing the regulations and determining associated fees.

The meeting agenda and supporting documents will be available on our public meeting agendas webpage on Friday, June 15.

More capacity created at Broadway parking garage

With parking demand high downtown, particularly around the lunch and dinner hours, the City has taken steps to pilot a new program at the Broadway garage that will add capacity of 80 additional vehicles.  It's not quite a full valet experience, but it's known as attendant assistant parking:  if the garage is full, an attendant will direct you to an aisle where you can park, leave your keys, and when you return your car will have been moved to an open spot.  The easiest way to understand how it works is to see it in action; you can watch our attendant assisted parking video online.

Community and survey on fair housing issues

The City of Walnut Creek, in conjunction with the County and local housing authorities, are working together on a regional fair housing assessment.  The assessment will help us understand and address housing issues, including discrimination, segregation, access to transit and schools, and healthy neighborhoods.  You're invited to share your thoughts at a community meeting to be held in the Concord City Council Chambers on Monday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m.  You can get more details and RSVP here.  If you can't attend in person, share your thoughts in the online fair housing survey.

Volunteer Opportunties

Open your home to host teens from our partner city, Kita City

The City’s Center for Community Arts is excited to host teens from our partner city, Kita City, Japan, for our second annual Teen Studio Program, from August 6 - August 10. Local teens are invited to join the cultural exchange in one of two tracks: photography or studio art. We are also looking for host families to host Kita City students; if you are interested, please find out more at the teen summer studio program website.  Participation fees are waived for students whose families also host a Kita City student.

Theater Thursday, June 15, at Civic Park Community Center Assembly Hall

The Vagabond Players will perform the "The Boys Next Door," a play by Tom Griffin about four men, with various mental disabilities, who live in a group home together under the care of their social worker. The play provides a humorous commentary on the men's lives, taking a surprising turn when an unexpected guest comes to visit. The play is also marked by the compassion and understanding with which it peers into the world of its protagonists. $5 tickets will be available for purchase at the front desk or at the door, and a wine reception will follow the performance.
