August 2016
August offers two special opportunities to interact with the
people who make Walnut Creek Work. On Tuesday, August 2, come to Civic Park
between 4 and 7 p.m. to meet the Walnut Creek Police Department as part of
“National Night Out.” Look for K-9 demonstrations, the Bomb Team, police
vehicles and more.
Then on Saturday, August 13 from 9 a.m. to noon, come enjoy
the “City Showcase,” a free, fun open house at City Hall and the Lesher Center
for the Arts. Look for big trucks, backstage tours, police vehicles and the
chance to be in a Walnut Creek TV commercial. I’ll be at one of the “passport
stations” – be sure to say hello!

Sportsplex II, skilled nursing facility, approved for Shadelands
The Planning Commission
unanimously approved Sportsplex Phase II, an indoor sports training facility at
the Shadelands business park that will include gymnastics, a swim academy,
soccer, Taekwondo, baseball and volleyball, as well as a café or restaurant.
This second phase is in addition to the existing Ultimate Fieldhouse basketball
facility, which opened in December 2015. At the same meeting, the Commission approved an
adjacent 59-bed skilled nursing facility designed specifically for acute
short-term care for conditions such as joint replacement surgery, acute illness
recovery and severe fracture care. These projects were made possible by zoning
changes the City made last year that expanded the kinds of businesses that could settle in the Shadelands.

Clean energy company on City Council August 2 agenda
On Tuesday, August 2,
representatives from clean energy provider MCE will be giving the City Council
an update on their outreach activities in anticipation of the September launch
of MCE in Walnut Creek. The Council voted earlier this year to join MCE, which
provides a minimum of 50 percent clean energy, compared to 30 percent for
PG&E. All Walnut Creek homes and businesses will be automatically enrolled
in MCE unless they choose to opt out and remain with PG&E. The Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. and will
be televised on Walnut Creek TV. For
more on MCE, click here.
