Civil Rights Essay Contest Winner
Earlier this week, we recognized the winner of our Annual Civil Rights Memorial Essay Contest, Aimee Calderon. This talented sixth grader read her winning essay about Claudette Colvin who will be honored in our Civil Rights Memorial at City Hall. This is the tenth year we've hosted our Civil Rights Memorial Essay Contest to celebrate those who have contributed to advancing the civil rights of all people. Fifth- and sixth-grade students throughout the City of Victorville are invited to compete in our annual contest.

Shred-Fest, Compost Giveaway, and Recycling Event: Feb. 1
Are you looking to offload some of your old paperwork, TVs, appliances, mattresses and more? Take advantage of the FREE Shred-Fest, Compost Giveaway, and Recycling Drop-off at the Victor Valley Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
This event will feature drive-thru document shredding, a compost giveaway, E-Waste and appliance disposal, and free mattress and box spring recycling. All activities are FREE and open to residents of the High Desert.
The Victor Valley MRF is located at 17000 Abbey Lane in Victorville, just off Stoddard Wells Road.

Christmas Tree Mulch
As a thank you, Burrtec is sponsoring a FREE mulch giveaway. Now through Feb. 15, free mulch made from Christmas trees will be available to residents at the Victor Valley Compost Facility, located at 17188 E. Abbey Lane. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Animal Services
FREE Dog Licensing and Microchipping Event: Jan. 25
Stop by our Animal Care and Adoption Center located at 16648 E. St., Saturday Jan. 25 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., for our FREE dog licensing and microchipping event. This free service is offered to Victorville residents only.
Proof of residency and a current rabies vaccine is required.
Pet Adoption & Fostering
Meet pets that are available to adopt or foster at our Animal Care & Adoption Center located at 16648 E St. You can stop by Monday through Thursday 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.
As a reminder, while we are still building out our new Animal Care and Adoption Center, we encourage residents to call our Animal Services to report stray dogs in the City of Victorville rather than bringing them to the shelter. For your personal safety, please don't try to capture stray animals.

Saturday Movies: Join us every Saturday in January at the Victorville City Library for two family-friendly movies based on books!
The first movie is at 12 p.m. and the second is at 2 p.m. This event is free for all ages.
Dr. Seuss Birthday Extravaganza: Join us Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. for our Dr. Seuss Birthday Extravaganza! We will have games, crafts and giveaways!

Outdoor Activity
Calling all teen explorers! Join our six-week Outdoor Adventure Program this spring.
Designed for teens ages 13 through 17, this program will give you the chance to discover the wonders of various eco-systems, hike through beautiful trails, and kayak on serene waters! Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early!
Recreation Sports
Pee Wee and Youth T-Ball: Play Ball! Our Pee Wee T-Ball (ages 3-4) and Youth T-Ball (ages 5 -7) will run this Spring. Participants will learn basic T-ball skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship in a non-competitive atmosphere. Registration is now open and will close on Feb.14. Youth T-Ball begins on March 31, and Pee-Wee T-Ball starts on April 7.
The registration fee for Pee-Wee T-Ball is $53-resident, $59-non-resident & Youth T-Ball is $69-resident, $76-non-resident.
Youth Volleyball: Are you ready to serve? Our Recreation Division is offering co-ed volleyball for ages 11 through 13 and for age 17. Participants will learn fundamental bumping, passing, teamwork, and sportsmanship skills. The season will run from April 14 through June 14.
The volleyball registration fee is $69 for residents and $76 for non-residents.
Call for Certified Sports Officials: We are looking for Certified Sports officials for a variety of our sports programs throughout the year.
Preschool Programs:
Jump start your child's education at one of our Preschool Programs. Children will learn new skills, participate in fun activities, and socialize with other children! Registration is now open for children between the ages of three and five for classes at Hook Community Center and Sunset Ridge Park. The deadline to register is Jan. 25.

Call for Vendors, Spring Festival and Egg Hunt
Beginning Feb. 3, vendors interested in participating at our Spring Festival and Egg Hunt can submit their application to secure a spot at this family-friendly event.
Our Spring Festival and Egg Hunt will take place April 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hook Park.
