FATAL VEHICLE COLLISION
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – On Thursday, April 9, at about 10:55 p.m., Sunnyvale DPS Patrol and Fire personnel responded to the area of Central Expressway and Commercial Street on a report of a major vehicle collision involving a sedan and a truck. When emergency personnel arrived on scene, they found one of the drivers, a woman in her 50s, unresponsive and trapped inside her vehicle. She was extricated from the vehicle, but tragically, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle, a man in his 30s was transported by ambulance to the Valley Medical Center for medical evaluation. During the course of the investigation, the driver declined to provide a statement to investigators and refused to provide a blood sample for chemical analysis. Investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant and blood sample was collected. The driver was later arrested for felony driving under the influence (DUI). Additional charges are pending.
The collision remains under investigation by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact MAIT Investigator M. Longanecker at (408) 730-7110.
