BURGLAR CHARGED WITH ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON
On Monday, February 24, 2025, at approximately 1:55 a.m., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Officers responded to a glass break alarm at a business, located in the 500 block of Lawrence Expressway. The officers found that several businesses in the area had been burglarized. During the investigation, officers located a suspect who was later identified as 28-year-old Walter Chicas of Mountain View.
Chicas fled on foot to evade officers. During the foot pursuit, officers heard what sounded like gunshots. Chicas was ultimately taken into custody without incident. Thankfully, no one was injured during this incident. A search of the area was conducted but no firearm was located. Chicas was booked into the county jail on several counts of burglary and other various charges.
On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the Mountain View and Palo Alto police departments conducted a search of Chicas’s residence for an unrelated crime. During the search, a handgun was found and later linked to an active Sunnyvale case. The Mountain View Police Department promptly notified Sunnyvale DPS detectives. As a result, Chicas was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon and additional weapons violations.
This case highlights the strong working relationships between Sunnyvale DPS, Palo Alto PD, and Mountain View PD, whose ongoing collaboration and information-sharing were critical in advancing the investigation across jurisdictions.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the Mountain View and Palo Alto police departments for their continued collaboration and partnership in making all our communities safer.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Detective Limon at 408-730-7110.
