Hello, Suisun City!
For the April edition of the Suisun City Scoop, we are excited to highlight the Fire Department, which has been hard at work keeping our community safe, connected and prepared. This month, we are thrilled to celebrate the dedication of our first responders and share some insight into how they train to protect our neighborhoods.
We want to extend a huge congratulations to Fire Engineer Andrew Kegle and Firefighter Paramedic Andrew Farrell on successfully completing their rigorous probationary process! Their hard work reflects the high standards of our department and a steadfast commitment to serving Suisun City.
To ensure our city is always ready for an emergency, the Fire Department regularly conducts joint exercises to stay sharp:
– Suisun City Firefighters and Basic Life Support Instructors recently led hands-on CPR and First Aid renewal training for the Suisun Police Department. Thank you to Captain Danner, Engineer Rivera, Engineer Helton and Engineer Duchscher for their leadership.
– Crews teamed up with the Fairfield Fire Department at the Suisun Boat Launch to practice essential water-supply techniques and strengthen regional emergency coordination.
Beyond their emergency duties, our department loves engaging with the community and recently had a great time stopping by a local neighborhood lemonade stand to support our younger residents.
The Suisun City Fire Department remains committed to providing the highest level of care and service to our residents.
Warm regards,
Brad L. Lopez Fire Chief City of Suisun City

We are also incredibly proud to celebrate Sergeant Bob Szmurlo, who recently received the prestigious California Boating Safety Officers Association Wes Dodd Award. This achievement honors his 47 years of outstanding service, marine enforcement and mentorship, which includes helping to launch our department’s Boating Program in 1979 and continuing to serve Suisun’s waterways even after retirement.
Thank you, Sergeant Szmurlo, for your dedication to keeping the Suisun City community safe on the water.

Recreation, Parks and Marina Department
The Recreation, Parks & Marina Department was honored to receive the California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) “Best of the Best” Award of Excellence for its adaptive programming at the April 7 City Council meeting. CPRS Executive Director Stephanie Stephens presented the award, celebrating a multi-year effort spearheaded by Senior Management Analyst Marvin Mora to build a truly inclusive recreation system inspired by his personal experience as a parent.
Since launching the flagship Club Chaos program in 2023 alongside Special Care Services and the North Bay Regional Center, the City has expanded to offer adaptive sports and an annual Autism Acceptance Month run. This initiative is about creating a thriving community of inclusion, wellness and belonging for all families.
This month, the department has been hard at work keeping youth engaged and our facilities in top shape:
– The After School Program is gearing up for Summer with a new Galileo STEM program that teaches participants teamwork, adaptability and communication.
– Over at the Lambrecht Sports Complex, staff recently made repairs to the score booths on all fields for the Suisun American Little League opening day and spring youth baseball tournaments.
– Marina Recreation Manager Joseph Gatmen conducted a site visit to Riverbank’s Marina in Sacramento to gain insight into facility operations and collaborate on preparations for the boating season.
Lastly, the department would like to invite community members to the grand opening of the Prosperity Community Garden at Prosperity Garden Park on April 29 at 10 a.m. Interested residents can still secure a plot by filling out the Prosperity Garden Interest Form.
