As we reflect on the summer, I’m reminded of what makes San Mateo County such a remarkable place: the people who pour their hearts into the community. In every corner of our community, we see individuals rising to meet challenges, inspiring others, and setting new standards for what’s possible.
In this edition of the newsletter, we’re proud to celebrate local excellence in all its forms. From the Alpine Little League team’s historic championship run, to Kimberly Palmer’s international success in equestrian vaulting, to the decades-long environmental advocacy of Lennie Roberts—each story is a testament to the talent, tenacity, and values that define our region.
Their accomplishments remind us that greatness doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through years of effort, the support of community, and an unwavering belief in something bigger than oneself. Please take a moment to read their inspiring stories below.
As always, thank you for your continued support. If you have a local story of excellence to share, or simply want to get in touch, please email us at SMC_SupMueller@smcgov.org.

Alpine Little League Makes History
On September 7th, Supervisor Mueller was joined by State Senator Becker in honoring our local all star Alpine Little League. This summer, the Alpine Little League 12U All-Star Team delivered a season to remember, capturing the District 52, Section 3, and Northern California State Championships—a first in Alpine history. With standout performances from local players representing Menlo Park and Portola Valley schools, the team’s historic run earned them a spot in the West Region Tournament and national airtime. Under the leadership of Head Coach Dave Levinson, Alpine’s athletes not only showcased elite talent and sportsmanship but also inspired the entire community with their determination and teamwork. While their journey to the Little League World Series ended, their legacy as 2025 NorCal State Champions will be remembered for years to come.

Kimberly Palmer Vaults to Global Recognition
Born and raised in Half Moon Bay, Kimberly Palmer has risen from a local talent to one of the world’s premier athletes in equestrian vaulting. Introduced to the sport at just three years old, Kimberly has represented the United States on the global stage, securing top-five finishes at the FEI Vaulting World Championships in both 2024 and 2025, and earning a bronze medal at the FEI Vaulting World Cup Final.
Named the 2024 Vaulter of the Year by the US Equestrian Federation, Kimberly’s achievements reflect not only her extraordinary dedication and artistry but also the strength of her supportive community and family. Her journey—from local stables to international podiums—is a powerful reminder that world-class excellence can begin right here in San Mateo County. Supervisor Mueller and the Board of Supervisors honored Kimberly at the August 26th board meeting.

Guardian of the Coast

At the September 23rd Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Mueller recognized Lennie Roberts for more than 50 years of visionary environmental leadership. Widely recognized as one of the Bay Area’s most respected and influential environmental leaders, and a driving force behind the creation and expansion of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District as well as a long-time advocate with Green Foothills, Lennie has helped preserve thousands of acres of open space in San Mateo County.
Her landmark achievements include co-authoring the 1986 Coastal Protection Initiative (Measure A), ensuring lasting protections for the Coastside. In recognition of her monumental contributions, the planned loop trail within the Johnston Ranch Uplands area of Miramontes Ridge Open Space Preserve will be named the Lennie Roberts Trail.

Legacy in the Spotlight:
Celebrating Local Icons
This month, we’re tipping our hats to two beloved community institutions that have stood the test of time and continue to shape the cultural and economic heart of San Mateo County.
Draeger’s Market is celebrating a remarkable 100 years of delivering premium produce, dry goods, and unmatched service since its founding in 1925. A true community cornerstone, Draeger’s has remained a family-run business and a trusted local gem across generations.
Kepler’s Books, founded in 1955, marks its 70th anniversary as a beacon of literary thought, civic engagement, and cultural exchange. More than a bookstore, Kepler’s has been a vital hub for intellectuals, artists, and activists from across the Bay Area and beyond.
We join the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in honoring these exceptional institutions for their legacy and lasting impact.
