Thank you for your interest in Women's Equality Day!

Over 170 community members attended or watched (via Zoom) our sold-out Commission on Status of Women (CSW) Women’s Equality Day event on August 26, “HER VOICE. HER POWER. OUR FUTURE.” Based on our theme that the modern-day challenge to gaining our voice and our power is our struggle for economic prosperity, a panel of our electeds, Supervisors Corzo, Gauthier and Speier led by Commissioner LaSaundra Gutter, conducted a very lively discussion about their own journeys to financial security and prosperity.

We Gained the Right to Vote but Struggle with Economic Prosperity

The CSW interviewed and surveyed many San Mateo County women and studied data over two years after becoming alarmed at Covid’s negative financial impact on women. We presented our findings to the Board of Supervisors in October, 2024 and they approved the Report. They further passed a Resolution to enact the Action Plan for Women and Children that would address the concerns we raised and included several other important priorities for women. Our report describes three significant financial gaps:

  1. Women, particularly women of color, have less wealth than men.
  2. Women earn less compared to men in San Mateo County.
        -  Women’s median income is 25% less than men's.
  3. Women are burdened by limited access to affordable childcare in San Mateo County.
        -  San Mateo County is short 9,000 childcare slots.

Equal Pay Pledge

CSW is launching a campaign to encourage organizations to sign the California Equal Pay Pledge and commit to closing the gender pay gap in California. The pay gap for San Mateo County employees has dropped from 6% to 4.8% over the last year and after they signed the Equal Pay Pledge. The County of San Mateo joined other prominent companies based in the county, and hundreds of other companies, organizations and municipalities statewide by signing the California Equal Pay Pledge. As a business owner, would you like to see your organization featured as a fair workplace? As an employee, are you interested in approaching your employer to take the Pledge? As a member of the nonprofit sector, do you want to align with the mission of the Pledge?  Please see the California Equal Pay Pledge for more resources. Let's make San Mateo County the best place for women to work and prosper!

Thank you San Mateo County for your interest in our work!
