Hispanic Heritage Month

Hello JFY Members, and happy September!

Can you believe it's already September?! Neither can we!

This month, we invite you all to join us in celebrating National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. Each year from September 15 through October 15, Americans celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded under the Reagan administration in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Indigenous Peoples Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Please find more information regarding National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month by visiting the website linked here.

Volunteer Opportunities w/ City of San Mateo

What makes San Mateo so great is the involvement and commitment of community members like you.  So, why not join us by volunteering your time, energy and talents in continuing to make our city the best place to live! Visit www.cityofsanmateo.org/volunteer to view current citywide opportunities and sign up today.

Volunteering:

  • Gives you something to do while waiting for your next job.
  • Expands your network!  You might wind up meeting someone who knows someone who gets you to a paying job.
  • Helps you explore an interest or type of work you never knew existed – and find out you are really good at it.
  • Re-energizes you when your job search energy gets low.  Doing something to help others changes the energy you project – and that shows in interviews.
  • Gives you something to talk about in your interview that explains what you’ve been doing with your time.
  • Makes you feel better about yourself. When you feel good about who you are and what you have to offer, you’ll project a positive attitude that connects with people.
