County Sues State Over $38 Million in Withheld Funds
The County of San Mateo has filed a lawsuit against the State of California, alleging the State is withholding nearly $38 million owed to the County and its 20 cities. Local leaders say the money is vital for health care, public safety and affordable housing. The dispute centers on the Vehicle License Fee Adjustment Amount (VLFAA), a funding source established in a 2004 budget compromise. County officials argue the State’s failure to pay violates its own law and threatens core services from Daly City to East Palo Alto.
