We are excited to announce the soft launch of the County's new Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement (OLSE) focused on ensuring adherence to minimum wage laws in all unincorporated areas of San Mateo County. OLSE aims to advance fair labor practices and operates as a collaborative partnership between the County Executive's Office, the County Attorney's Office, and the District Attorney's Office, integrating existing strengths to implement the following primary functions:
- Support the development of labor policies that protect workers and support businesses across San Mateo County.
- Provide outreach and education to workers and employers within San Mateo County about their rights and obligations in the workplace, including minimum wage requirements.
- Enforce labor standards that protect San Mateo County workers through coordinated investigations and efforts to secure compliance.
As a new office, OLSE is taking a phased approach to implementation. Starting in the unincorporated areas, we’ll expand in July to contracting cities, including but not limited to Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City, Redwood City, City of San Mateo, and Menlo Park. We’ll continue to explore expanding based on the capacity we have to be appropriately responsive.
As part of the first phase, we have launched a confidential Labor Advice Hotline, staffed by multilingual attorneys from our non-profit partner, the Step Forward Foundation. The Labor Advice Hotline will provide advice on workplace labor standards to workers and employers seeking to understand their rights and obligations, as well as support filing claims with OLSE and other government agencies where appropriate. To ask questions or file a complaint, call our free and confidential Labor Advice Hotline at 1-866-870-7725 or send us an email at OLSE@smcgov.org. Over the coming months, OLSE will conduct extensive outreach, and begin enforcing the County's Minimum Wage.
We would like to introduce you to key OLSE staff across the three partnering offices:
- Shane Ross, Labor Standards Manager
-
Carolina Babbidge, Deputy County Attorney
-
Kyle Cakebread, Deputy District Attorney
In solidarity, The Office of Racial and Social Justice Michelle Flores Pulido, Labor Standards Associate Andrew Knaack, Equity and Belonging Associate Shireen Malekafzali Taidi, Chief Equity Officer Shane Ross, Labor Standards Manager Belén Seara, Equity and Belonging Manager
