Public Invited Today to Celebrate 500 County Center
Residents are invited to "Celebrating Our Story," a free event sponsored by the County of San Mateo and San Mateo County History Museum to celebrate the county’s 169th anniversary and 500 County Center, an award-winning sustainable office building. The evening kicks off at 5 p.m. and includes a re-enactment of the county’s early days at the museum followed by a musical procession to 500 County Center where the building will be officially dedicated. A reception, live DJ and kids crafts are all part of the festivities. Parking is free in the San Mateo County Jury Parking Garage.

Supervisors Allocate $2M to Expand Farmworker Housing
San Mateo County supervisors at their May 6, 2025, meeting agreed to seed a fund that will provide loans to local farmers who provide low-cost housing to their workforce. At a hearing in Redwood City, supervisors voted 5-0 to allocate $2 million to help address a shortage of affordable housing for the region’s farm laborers. The funds are intended to help qualifying farm owners and operators rehabilitate existing units to ensure that they meet essential health and safety standards as well as build new housing. Funding comes from the voter-approved Measure K half-cent sales tax.

Department of Public Works to Host Equipment Showcase
The San Mateo County Department of Public Works (DPW) is inviting the public to a special equipment showcase on May 21, 2025, in honor of National Public Works Week. The Board of Supervisors proclaimed May 18–24, 2025, as Public Works Week in San Mateo County, recognizing the department’s vital role across local infrastructure and emergency response. At the event, attendees can expect to see up close heavy-duty trucks, electric tools, generators, response vehicles and a new excavator. There will also be opportunities to meet the DPW crews who maintain roads, facilities & emergency systems.

County Marks Milestone in New Affordable Housing
San Mateo County is celebrating a major achievement in affordable housing with the grand opening of Midway Village I and the groundbreaking of Midway Village 2 tomorrow, Friday, May 16, in Daly City. The largest affordable housing effort in County history is led by MidPen Housing in partnership with the County through the Department of Housing and Housing Authority. The Board of Supervisors, sitting as the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority, approved a $14 million loan to support Phase 2 construction, complementing an $8 million American Rescue Plan Act loan previously approved by the Board.

Vacancies Open on County Boards, Commissions
Several County Boards, Commissions and Committees — including the Arts Commission, Parks Commission, Design Review Committee, Independent Civilian Advisory Commission on the Sheriff's Office and Farmworker Advisory Commission — have vacancies and are recruiting new members. Find a full list here. These bodies advise governmental bodies including the Board of Supervisors in their decision-making process through direct citizen participation. Serving on a County commission or board is a great way to get involved in the local community. Participation is voluntary; some posts carry a $50 stipend.
