Third District April Newsletter |
|
Dear Neighbors,
April is here, and it’s a perfect reminder to reflect on the importance of staying connected to our community—especially in challenging times. One issue that has deeply impacted our community is AT&T’s push to remove their “carrier of last resort” obligations, effectively eliminating landline services for many who still depend on them. These landlines are more than just copper wires—they are lifelines for residents in our more remote and rural areas, where cell service is spotty at best, and to those with access and functional needs in urban areas during power outages.
Just last week I was one of four County Supervisors across the state, invited to speak at the California Public Utilities Commission, on the necessity of maintaining landline service. Presently the state legislature is considering legislation that could significantly alter AT&T’s obligation to provide this service.
Last year I led County efforts to stand firmly against AT&T’s attempt to withdraw these services, first at the PUC and then at the state legislature. My office and the County remains committed to this fight, as we continue to monitor any attempt to withdraw service.
You can read more about our work in this area and on other issues in District 3, below.
As always, it’s an honor to serve as your Supervisor. Let’s continue to build a safer, more connected community for all. If you’d like to share your thoughts, feel free to email us at SMC_SupMueller@smcgov.org.
We look forward to hearing from you!

In the News: Standing Up for Reliable Communication |
|
|
Pictured Above: Last March the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors heard from AT&T officials about ending landline service to thousands of customers.
While many might assume that Silicon Valley offers top-tier connectivity, there are still large parts of San Mateo County—particularly along the coast and in the hills—where cell phone service is inconsistent or unavailable. For these communities, landlines remain a critical lifeline. Despite this, AT&T has sought to remove its obligation to maintain landline service in these areas. That’s why I’ve been vocal in my opposition to this move. By standing up for our most vulnerable residents, we ensure that everyone has reliable communication, especially in times of emergency.

Residents of West Menlo Park recently raised concerns about a potential unlicensed smoke shop at 3536 Alameda de las Pulgas, due to its proximity to schools and youth centers. The shop, which was set to replace a tutoring service, caught the attention of the community when a large “Smoke Shop” sign appeared outside the vacant storefront in late October 2024.
After hearing from many concerned neighbors, Supervisor Ray Mueller, a Menlo Park resident himself, took immediate action. “Working with County professionals, we determined the shop violated a Tobacco Retailer ordinance I helped the County strengthen in 2023, to protect youth, in my first year on the Board of Supervisors”, said Supervisor Ray Mueller.
In response, the County notified the shop owner that the store could not operate at that location. Following productive discussions, the shop’s sign was removed in early November, preventing the shop from opening.
Supervisor Mueller’s swift response highlights his ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, particularly in protecting youth from potential harm.
