March 4 Special Election on Measure A to Move Forward
The March 4, 2025, special election on Measure A will move forward after Superior Court Judge Nicole Healy issued a ruling rejecting Sheriff Christina Corpus' arguments seeking to cancel the special election & dismissing her lawsuit. “From the beginning, we expected the court to agree that the County properly placed Measure A on the ballot for the special election. We are pleased at this outcome. We believe that the sheriff’s decision not to challenge the tentative ruling reflects the strength of the County’s legal position, as well as of the care with which Judge Healy prepared her decision,” said County Attorney John Nibbelin.
Supervisors Support Mental Health of First Responders
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors at their Feb. 25 meeting approved a resolution that focuses on the mental health and wellbeing of first responders who experience rates of depression and thoughts of suicide at rates higher than the general population. “We need to support the people who support our communities,” said David Canepa, president of the Board of Supervisors. “They routinely face extremely stressful situations and put themselves in harm’s way to help us. What we can all do is show our continued support for our first responders and the mental health challenges they face.”
County Appoints New Center on Homelessness Director
The San Mateo County Center on Homelessness has been elevated to a division of the County’s Human Services Agency with Amy Davidson – formerly the deputy director of the Department of Health, Housing and Community Services for the City of Berkeley – as its head. Davidson sees her role as bringing people with different ideas and alliances together to solve what everyone can agree is a crisis that defies jurisdictional boundaries. “What strikes me is that San Mateo County seems super collaborative and people are trying to do their best and work together,” she said.
CDC Journal Features County Health’s Mpox Response
The work of San Mateo County Health’s disease investigation and public health laboratory teams was featured in the February 13, 2025, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). In November 2024, County Health responded to the first case known case in the United States of clade I mpox. After its lead role in the response, County Health was asked by the CDC to serve as first authors of the scholarly paper to appear in the MMWR about the outbreak. The publication provides best practices to health care professionals for identifying & containing a potential outbreak of clade I mpox.
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is seeking applications for residents interested in serving their community. Opportunities are available on numerous boards and commissions that provide valuable guidance in their area of focus. These include openings on the Parks and Recreation Commission (District 1), Planning Commission (District 1), Farmworker Advisory Commission, Bayside and Coastside Design Review Committees, and many others. Participation is largely voluntary; some posts but not all carry a stipend. Applicants can apply here through the online application or by mail.
