Dear JFY Community,
As current events continue to weigh increasingly heavy on us, we wanted to ensure to amplify some very helpful resources to help keep yourself and your communities safe. Please read on for helpful Know Your Rights resources to hopefully help you feel more empowered and in the know about what your personal rights are.
All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home. These are available in multiple languages. One side of the card is printed in the language of the resident, and the other side is printed in English to be presented to the immigration official. Download and print cards here:
The San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs and its partners are presenting Know Your Rights workshops and information sessions in community spaces and at nonprofit organizations from Daly City to Pescadero.
The workshops are in line with the County’s recognition as a Certified Welcoming place by Welcoming America, becoming the first county in California to achieve the distinction for its commitment to immigrant inclusion and belonging.
At the roughly 90-minute workshops, outreach workers in English and Spanish cover a range of topics that many immigrants see as crucial for their and their family’s future.
They hand out wallet-friendly red cards, which include a script to help people assert their rights at home, in the workplace or in a public location. They provide a rapid-response hotline (203-666-4472) to call if federal immigration agents come to your home or work, contacts for legal assistance and additional resources.
| Immigration Preparedness Toolkit |
The ILRC’s Immigration Preparedness Toolkit is a resource-packed informational document designed to help immigrants with no legal status or in mixed status families begin to understand the immigration legal landscape and plan for their own journey through an ever-changing, complex system in the United States. This is available in English and Spanish (disponible en inglés y español).
In addition to the Immigration Preparedness Toolkit, which is for anyone with immigration concerns, the Family Preparedness Plan is specifically for individuals and families with children or other dependents in their care.
This resource helps families put a plan in place in case of an immigration-related emergency. Though we hope you never need to use this plan, we want to ensure all community members are prepared with a plan in place. It includes guidance for completing a Caregiver's Authorization Affidavit, to ensure that if you are ever unable to care for your child, you will have a plan in place for their care. This plan is available in English and Spanish (disponible en inglés y español).
