County Parks Celebrates Memorial Park Centennial
Local officials & multiple generations of families gathered at Memorial Park today to celebrate the park's 100-year anniversary. "For a century the Parks Department has protected public lands while creating opportunities for people to connect with nature," said Parks Director Nicholas Calderon. The event kicked off with the 23rd Marine Regiment Color Guard Team & national anthem. County Executive Officer Mike Callagy provided opening remarks & speakers included President of the Board of Supervisors Warren Slocum, Supervisor Ray Mueller & representatives from the offices of Rep. Anna Eshoo, Sen. Josh Becker & Assemblymember Diane Papan.

Officials Launch Campaign on Beach Safety
Moved by recent drownings off the San Mateo County coast, Supervisor Ray Mueller, City of Half Moon Bay, CAL FIRE, San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and other local agencies launched a public safety campaign this summer, reminding visitors to exercise caution when visiting local beaches. "... there are sneaker waves that can take a person out into the water very quickly and without warning," said Supervisor Ray Mueller whose District Three includes the coast. Flashing roadside signs along Highway 1 and Highway 92 bear messages, “Be Smart. Play Safe. Stay Aware” and “Don’t turn back on the ocean.”

County Passes on Developing Former Coastal Nursery
After a months-long study of a coastside former greenhouse site once eyed for affordable housing and other amenities, the County of San Mateo publicly announced that it will not move forward with acquisition of the property. An analysis of the nearly 50-acre site at 2265 & 2275 Cabrillo Highway South determined that the site is ultimately not suitable for the County’s specific needs. But even with this property off the table, the County is moving forward with support for several coastal projects aimed at providing affordable housing for agricultural workers and others.

Supervisors Approve $3.3M for Early Childhood Education
San Mateo County supervisors recently approved $3.3 million in grants to support early childhood education in communities from Daly City to Pescadero. The grants support The Big Lift, a collective impact collaborative that seeks to increase kindergarten readiness and improve third grade reading proficiency in targeted school districts. Funding for the total of $3,311,208 comes from the Measure K half-cent local sales tax. The Big Lift is led by the County of San Mateo, San Mateo County Office of Education and the San Mateo County Libraries.

New County Fire Rescue Vehicle Goes into Service
A new, custom-built rescue vehicle, designed and built by San Mateo County Fire Department and La Honda Fire Brigade, recently went into service. The four wheel drive unit is designed to meet the challenges of the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County and holds extrication and specialized rescue equipment. This apparatus responds to vehicle accidents, medical emergencies and rescues in La Honda and surrounding areas. The specialized rescue vehicle, known as Rescue 57, was made possible by the Measure K fire apparatus replacement fund.
