Board of Supervisors Approve $4.2 Billion Budget
San Mateo County supervisors approved a $4.2 billion budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year with priorities focusing on services for children, families and seniors, housing and homelessness and emergency preparedness. Despite slowing or stalled growth from property taxes and other revenue sources, the budget funds the key services such as public safety, social services and health services that make up the core function of County government. These include funding for health and mental health care, jobs programs, early learning and expanding food resources with targeted investments in ending homelessness.

Health Offers Protective Gear to Farm Workers From H5N1
In response to the potential for H5N1 infection, also known as bird flu, San Mateo County Health is participating in a state program to provide personal protective equipment to workers on poultry and dairy farms. Cases of H5N1 have been detected among birds in the Bay Area, and in other livestock, including dairy cows, nationally. While around the country there have been three recent human cases among workers in close contact with dairy cows, there are no known H5N1 cases in humans or cattle to date in California.

Sheriff’s Office to Host Fireworks Buyback Event
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and partners are hosting an anonymous fireworks buyback event Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new Sheriff's Office Substation located at 690 Broadway in Redwood City. The event aims to enhance community safety by encouraging residents to turn in fireworks, which are illegal in all of San Mateo County, with the exception of the cities of Pacifica and San Bruno. Fireworks are also illegal in all County parks, state parks and the Crystal Springs watershed. The buyback program is supported by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors with Measure K funding.

County Moves to Support Domestic Violence Calls
San Mateo County supervisors – concerned over the pervasiveness of domestic violence – advanced an initiative that will send survivor advocates along with police to certain 911 calls. Once a scene is secure – and a survivor is willing – a survivor advocate from the new Domestic Violence Emergency Response Team will offer services and support. This will include help finding emergency shelter, navigating the legal system and locating swift and ongoing support and care. “We hope this pilot will save lives," said Supervisor Noelia Corzo, chair of the Domestic Violence Council.

Local Leaders Rally for Women’s Health Care
Community leaders gathered on June 24 in Courthouse Square in Redwood City to support women’s health care on the two-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that overturned the right to an abortion. “Today, all across America, there are protests. There are strikes. There are marches all recognizing the loss of freedom and rights for women,” Warren Slocum, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, said at a rally and news conference. The event was organized and hosted by Slocum, Supervisor Dave Pine and Assemblymember Diane Papan, D-21.

County Launches CARE Court to Provide Mental Health Help
San Mateo County Superior Court, in partnership with the County of San Mateo, will launch on July 1 CARE Court, a new strategy to deliver mental health, housing & other services to individuals suffering from untreated serious mental illness. “The community-based framework of the CARE Court program aligns with Behavioral Health and Recovery Services’ vision of enhancing care within our community & supporting recovery with compassion and respect,” said Dr. Jei Africa, director of County Health’s Behavioral Health & Recovery Services. "We see CARE Court as another tool to help individuals get connected to services in their recovery journey.”
