Hello JFY Community!
As May comes to an end and we welcome in June, we begin a new celebration - LGBTQIA+ Pride Month!
At Jobs for Youth, we strive each and every day toward a radically inclusive world and workforce. Please read on to learn more about the origins of Pride Month, various community events to celebrate Pride, and career development opportunities!
The history of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month
The origins of what we now recognize as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month go as far back as the early 1920s. Although several smaller uprisings occurred earlier in time, the crucial turning point in the gay rights movement is the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village in Manhattan at the end of June 1969. On June 28, 1969, NYPD officers raided the Stonewall Inn bar, where they violently arrested patrons. An uprising ensued, marking a huge turning point in the LGBTQIA+ movement.
One year later, during the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, activists in New York City marched through the streets of Manhattan in commemoration of the uprising. In time, that celebration came to be simply known as the Gay Pride Parade. The march, which took place on June 28, 1970, is now considered the country’s first gay pride parade. Marches and parades also took place that June in Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. (History.com)

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society. (Juneteenth.com)
