The Office of Racial and Social Justice held a webinar on February 29th titled Honoring our Shared Humanity: Countering Islamophobia and Antisemitism. Thank you to our co-hosts: Islamic Networks Group, County Health BHRS Office of Diversity and Equity, the Spirituality Initiative, and the Peninsula Solidarity Cohort.
Event Description: Islamophobia and antisemitism are on the rise locally due to international events. People in our community have lost loved ones, experienced increased hate and divisiveness, and some have lost a sense of belonging and community. If you missed the event, check out this recording to learn more about and acknowledge the experiences of many Jewish, Muslim, Israeli, Palestinian, and Arab communities, among others, in San Mateo County, and strive towards connecting across our shared humanity.

The County of San Mateo achieved Welcoming America’s 4-star Certified Welcoming designation, the first County in the nation to achieve the rating in the United States for our commitment to immigrant inclusion and belonging. The program assesses local governments against the Welcoming Standard to rate their efforts to include and welcome immigrants in all areas of civic, social and economic life.
“We have always known that San Mateo County is special. That we recognize, embrace and celebrate our diversity – it contributes to the vibrancy and resilience of our community where everyone feels valued, respected and able to thrive. Now we are being recognized nationally for this spirit,” said Warren Slocum, president of the Board of Supervisors.
Thank you to the Office of Community Affairs, who led the application effort, and to the numerous County departments, local residents and organizations that participated in the certification process.
