County Supervisors to Consider $34.5M Aid Package
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors at its upcoming March 26, 2024, regular Board meeting will consider a $34.5 million aid package aimed at bolstering support in three vital areas identified by the community as priorities. The Board of Supervisors received staff recommendations this week that propose spending $15 million for housing and homelessness initiatives, $16 million for children, family and senior services, and $3.5 million for emergency preparedness efforts. The $34.5 million comes from Measure K, a countywide, voter-approved sales tax extension.

New 4x4 Ambulances to Serve County's Coastal, Rural Areas
San Mateo County’s emergency ambulance services provider, American Medical Response, is adding three new 4x4 vehicles to its fleet with the first to serve the Coastside region. The new ambulances will enhance the lifesaving resources in the county's coastal areas as well as the Santa Cruz Mountains west of Skyline Boulevard. "With the winter storms and sometimes challenging road conditions, having a high-clearance four-wheel-drive ambulance can improve access to care as well as enhance safety & comfort for patients and crew," said Travis Kusman, director of the County’s Emergency Medical Services agency.

San Mateo County Parks Celebrates 100 Years
The San Mateo County Parks Department is celebrating a century of making the outdoors a welcoming place for all. On July 4, 1924, Memorial Park was dedicated and opened to the public and the San Mateo County Parks Department was created. To celebrate the 100-year anniversary, the public is invited to a series of events kicking off on April 13, 2024, with the 50th anniversary celebration of Wunderlich Park. Additional events include Memorial Park's 100th on July 11 & Summerfest at Coyote Point on August 10. Event reservations will open one month prior to each event.

Supervisors Raise Concerns About AT&T Landlines
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors took the first step toward opposing a move by AT&T that local officials said could put residents in rural areas at risk during wildfires and in other emergencies. At its March 12, 2024, regular Board meeting, Supervisors voted 5-0 to direct the County Attorney’s Office to draft a resolution opposing AT&T’s application with the California Public Utilities Commission to terminate its “Carrier of Last Resort” status, which would allow AT&T to end landline service to thousands of customers. A proposed resolution opposing AT&T’s application is expected to come to a vote before the Board at their March 26, 2024, meeting.

Sheriff’s Activities League to Open New Coastside Location
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League (SAL) will open a new coastside location in the next few months, serving kids and teens in Half Moon Bay & the unincorporated coastside communities with expanded programming. The new Coastside SAL Building, located at 235 Main St. in Half Moon Bay, is centrally located where youth can gather in a positive, safe environment, while accessing wrap around programs with San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputies and mentors. The new Coastside SAL Building is expected to open in the next few months. SAL will continue to operate a main location on the Peninsula.

County Boards, Commissions Recruiting New Members
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is accepting applications for appointment to multiple boards, commissions and committees, from the Assessment Appeals Board, Commission on Disabilities and Design Review Committee to the Independent Civilian Advisory Commission on the Sheriff's Office, Measure K Oversight Committee and more. Boards and commissions advise the Board of Supervisors and other governmental bodies in their decision-making process through direct citizen participation. Participation is largely voluntary; some posts but not all carry a $50 stipend.
