Black History Month

Hello, JFY Community! We are already in February, which means Black History Month is here!

During the month of February, we nationally honor the critical, vast role Black Americans have played in writing this country's history. From contributions to sacrifices, we take this time to pay close attention to the stories regarding the Black experience in this country and beyond.

The theme for Black History Month this year is African Americans and the Arts. African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment. Artistic and cultural movements such as the New Negro, Black Arts, Black Renaissance, hip-hop, and Afrofuturism, have been led by people of African descent and set the standard for popular trends around the world. In 2024, we examine the varied history and life of African American arts and artisans. (ASALH)

If you would like to learn more about Black History Month, whose origins date back to the Summer of 1915, please find various resources linked below. Additionally, please find community events and resources further down in the newsletter!
