The annual Civics 101 Academy is a chance to learn about all that your County government does, and to hear from (and ask questions of) leaders from most departments, as well as Board of Supervisors president Dave Pine and County Executive Mike Callagy.
You’ll learn about things like social services; our broad health system; ongoing initiatives like sustainability and equity; the elements of the county justice system (including a short mock trial); emergency management; boards and commissions; how the money works; library programs, and much more. We’ll likely also meet and get a short demonstration from a deputy sheriff and his four-legged K-9 partner!
Civics 101 will be held on nine consecutive Wed. evenings, starting Aug. 30 and finishing the evening of Oct. 25. Sessions meet from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and light refreshments are served.
We encourage residents that represent the diverse lived experiences of San Mateo County to apply. For more information, including the topics of each of the nine sessions, visit https://www.smcgov.org/ceo/civics-101-academy.
Application Deadline: August 28, 2023
Please send your application or any questions to Civics 101 coordinator Eric Forgaard at eforgaard@smcgov.org.
