County of San Mateo Hosts Annual Disaster Prep Day
The County of San Mateo’s 19th annual Disaster Preparedness Day is an opportunity for kids and adults to learn about "becoming self-sufficient in emergency preparedness, enabling them to survive and recover from a disaster as efficiently as possible,” said Don Mattei, director of the County’s Department of Emergency Management. The family-friendly free event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 5, 2023, at the San Mateo County Event Center. Giveaways and activities include free parking and hotdogs, a “Smoke Tunnel” simulation, selfies with a firefighter or police officer, CPR workshops, and more.

County Health Provides Heat Safety Tips and Prevention
The National Weather Service forecasts another warm weekend for much of the Bay Area, including southern San Mateo County. San Mateo County Health recommends practicing heat safety and prevention and knowing the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. “This means drinking plenty of fluids, wearing lightweight loose-fitted clothing, limiting outdoor activities during the hotter parts of the day, and staying in cool indoor places — like shopping malls, libraries, markets, community centers and other cooling centers," said Deputy County Health Officer Dr. Curtis Chan. Residents can check with their local city about cooling center locations.

Supervisors Approve Grant Fund for Local Businesses
San Mateo County Supervisors at its July 11, 2023, meeting voted to direct nearly $1 million to the Middlefield Road Small Business Assistance Program. Eligible North Fair Oaks businesses may apply for grants totaling up to $10,000 to help make payroll, pay rent and keep the doors open during a road improvement project that promises significant benefits but has taken longer than expected. “The pandemic, the change in the workforce, and the ongoing construction has created the perfect storm. Our businesses need help now,” said Supervisor Warren Slocum, who proposed the relief grants in his District 4.

County Parks Offer Shade, Picnic Spots for Summertime
San Mateo County Parks provide some respite on hot summer days, where Huddart, Memorial and Sam McDonald parks offer plenty of shade by way of majestic, second-growth Redwoods. Coastal parks like Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Pillar Point Bluff and Mirada Surf also offer reprieve from the heat with typically cooler temperatures this time of year. Parks with picnic sites and visitor centers include Edgewood, Wunderlich and San Pedro Valley. Before visiting, County Parks provides tips for hiking in the heat, a list of parks that charge a vehicle entry fee, information on pet-friendly parks, and more.

Supervisors Proclaim Probation Services Week
The San Mateo County Probation Department is celebrating Pretrial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week, a time to recognize the officers and staff who provide services, education and resources to more than 3,500 adult and juvenile clients in San Mateo County. San Mateo County Supervisors presented a proclamation to Chief Probation Officer John Keene, designating July 16-22 as Probation and Pretrial Services Week and thanking corrections professionals for their work transforming lives, promoting accountability, providing opportunities for those in the justice system, and enhancing community safety.

Program to Provide Foster Youth Guaranteed Income
In a unanimous vote at its July 11 meeting, San Mateo County Supervisors agreed to provide current and former foster youth ages 18 up to 22 with $1,000 a month in the County’s first guaranteed income program. Recipients can use the monthly stipend as they see fit, for education, transportation, housing, food and other needs. Supervisors voted to allocate $732,000 in local Measure K funds toward the $2.032 million pilot project. The balance will come from a pool of funds reserved for youth-focused services managed by the County’s own Human Services Agency and $100,000 from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
