Hello JFY Community!
What makes you feel empowered? As we enter the exciting summer months, JFY encourages you to use some of your newfound free time to empower yourself. This may look different for everybody. Whether it is implementing a new skincare routine, starting a new exercise regimen, volunteering in your community or learning something new, JFY encourages you to lean into it and explore something new.
Educating yourself on current social issues or on how to be a stronger ally is one way to empower yourself and your community. Therefore, JFY wants to recognize that in the month of July, we celebrate Disability Pride Month! It is dedicated to spotlight the history, experiences and struggles of the disability community. The celebration dates back to 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) was signed into law.
At JFY, we constantly strive for equity and inclusion of the youth we serve, as well as our extended community members. We want to highlight the importance of uplifting the diverse communities we share space with and also share ways for you to celebrate and recognize Disability Pride Month.
Be mindful!
Being cognizant of the everyday language we use is the first step in straying from perpetuating ableism. The goal is to be aware of how the words you use may impact the people around you.
We encourage you to use person-centered language or using phrases that put the individual first. A great implementation of this would be to say “people with disabilities” as opposed to "disabled people." The goal is to recognize the humanity and dignity of the person you are addressing first. These small actions can contribute towards making people feel seen.
In being mindful, we also empower able-bodied individuals to ensure that the activities they partake in are ADA-accessible. This can create safe and inclusive spaces.

As individuals, we are constantly evolving and educating ourselves and others on how to be more inclusive. Whether it is reading an article on the importance of disability visibility or listening to the stories of individuals with lived experiences, we encourage you to grow your knowledge.
Amplify voices!
Actively listen and amplify the voices of people with lived experiences. It is important to note that it is not their responsibility to educate us but be mindful that they should be centered in leading conversations among allies.
Remember that this is not an all-inclusive list. Engage in activities that feel right for you!

If you are not eligible for the fee tuition waiver or you would like to further enrich your community college education, be sure to apply to the SMCCD Promise Scholar Program. PSP enhances students’ journeys by offering academic counseling, financial support and tuition waivers, tutoring services, and more.
