County's Top Appointees Receive New Titles
To better reflect responsibilities, County Manager Mike Callagy will now be known as the county executive officer, heading the County Executive’s Office. County Counsel John Nibbelin will be referred to as the county attorney, leading the County Attorney’s Office. The Board of Supervisors adopted the ordinance modifying the titles after it received a second reading on Feb. 22, 2022. Board President Don Horsley said the switch made sense because the new titles are less ambiguous and "clearly spell out to the public what role they play."

Second Booster Shots Available for 50 and Older
Residents 50 and over and those who are immunocompromised are now eligible for a second COVID-19 booster, four months after their first booster. The best option for a second booster is a primary health care provider or a pharmacy. Eligible residents can also book an appointment through the state’s MyTurn system. County Health’s community clinics will provide boosters for walk-ins now but recommend booking an appointment. County Health continues to recommend vaccination, including boosters, as the greatest protection from the risks of severe disease or death from COVID-19.

$3.2M Awarded to Summer Enrichment Programs
The County of San Mateo announced this week that a fresh wave of awarded grant funds will allow more than 2,500 local students to attend enrichment programs this summer. The $3,217,500 in new grants comes from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), a stimulus package to help state and local governments overcome issues caused by the pandemic. Locally, the Board of Supervisors set support for children and families as a priority for ARPA funds. In all, the County is funding 42 providers that operate 72 programs.

New Mobile App Connects Residents to County News
County of San Mateo has adopted the Simplicity app, a new mobile communication channel that directly connects with residents by delivering important announcements and events directly to the user’s phone. Users can download the Simplicity app from the Google Play store or Apple’s App store and choose notification preferences and various topics including health updates, public safety information, schools and upcoming local events. Features include Spanish translation and real-time news and updates from the County of San Mateo and city of residence.

Interim ISD Director to Fill Position Permanently
Following a nationwide recruitment, County Executive Officer Mike Callagy has named long-time County employee Mike Wentworth to permanently fill the Information Services Department's (ISD) director position he’s held on an interim basis since May 2021. The Board approved the appointment at its April 5, 2022, meeting. As chief information officer (CIO)/director of the Information Services Department, Wentworth will oversee a department charged with supporting all County departments’ technological needs.

County Seeks Feedback on Climate Action Plan
Community members and leaders in partnership with the County's Office of Sustainability have developed a Community Climate Action Plan (CCPA) to help unincorporated San Mateo County become carbon neutral by 2040. The CCAP is a strategic roadmap to prepare for climate risks and create impactful greenhouse gas emission reductions. The draft CCPA is ready for public feedback. Through April 30, all residents are invited to a virtual open house to review the plan and share comments.
