Youth Who Are Making the World a Better Place: Amanda Gorman

Amanda Gorman is a wordsmith and change-maker! She read her poem “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration of President Joe Biden on Jan. 20, 2021, and is the youngest poet to read at a presidential inauguration in United States history at 23 years old.  Born and raised in Los Angeles, she began writing at only a few years of age. Now her words have won her invitations to the Obama White House and to perform for Lin-Manuel Miranda, Al Gore, Secretary Hillary Clinton, Malala Yousafzai, and others. Her first children’s book, “Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem,” aims to empower children to be hopeful and make change. To learn more about her impact, please visits the sites below:

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Cañada College and its partner colleges are excited to invite students and prospective students to the first Black and Brown Excellence summit. The Summit came about because of a need to be more intentional on how we support the Black and Brown community.

During this two-day event (February 24th & 25th), participants will engage with employers, learn about pathways to internships, and be introduced to jobs that are available now!

For the month of February, you can visit The Hoskins Black History Museum. It is a mobile museum offering a range of cultural artifacts, all designed to educate and inform our communities about Black History. The purpose of the museum is to educate our community, especially our youth about the rich history that African Americans have contributed to American society.

The Youth Advocacy and Social Summit (YAASS) aims to lead, inform, engage, and inspire all students in San Mateo County to be supportive of one another. YAASS specifically supports the work of LGBTQ+ high school students and their allies to make all high schools safer and more inclusive. If you are interested in attending this event on March 4th, 2022, please ask your teacher if you can register at the link above.
