Deputy County Counsel Justin Mates Named as New Deputy County Manager

San Mateo County Manager Mike Callagy is recommending Deputy County Counsel Justin Mates as a new deputy county manager in his office. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to confirm the appointment at its Oct. 22 regular meeting and Mates will join the County Manager’s Office in November. County Manager Mike Callagy cites Mates’ strong work ethic and vision for the County among the key assets that made him the best candidate for the deputy county manager position. LEARN MORE

Probation Manager Honored for Domestic Violence Prevention Efforts

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors at its Oct. 8, 2019, meeting honored Probation Manager Lori Smiley-Klinger as its 2019 winner of the annual Barbara Hammerman Award, citing her “continuous and persistent advocacy and leadership” in domestic violence prevention. Smiley-Klingler, an employee of the San Mateo County Probation Department since 1994, has overseen its Domestic Violence Unit since 2018. LEARN MORE

San Mateo County Health Officials Urge Flu Shots

As flu season begins, San Mateo County Health officials urge everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine. A flu vaccination can keep you from getting sick and may make your illness milder if you do get sick. It also helps protect family members and others in the community. The vaccine is available from your health care provider and from local pharmacies. To find a location near you, visit https://vaccinefinder.org/. SMCAlert Emergency Notification System Surpasses 100,000 Registrants

SMCAlert, San Mateo County's opt-in public alert and warning system, recently surpassed 100,000 registrants, according to the County's Office of Emergency Services. The alert and notification system is the tool to keeping residents informed of fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, extreme weather, roadway closures, natural or manmade disasters, and utility disruptions such as the recent PG&E power shut off that affected approximately 15,000 PG&E customers in San Mateo County. Used by the County, cities and other law enforcement and fire agencies in San Mateo County, SMCAlert sends emergency alerts and updates to the community via email or mobile phone. SIGN UP HERE

County's Office of Community Affairs Census Team Creates Census Testimonial Videos

The County's Census Team working out of the Office of Community Affairs worked with six San Mateo County residents to create short video testimonials discussing why Census 2020 is so important, how it affects communities and why everyone should participate and be counted. Participants in the video project include commissioners from the San Mateo County Veteran Commission and San Mateo County Youth Commission as well as a doctor from Kaiser Permanente and Henrietta Burroughs from East Palo Alto Today. VIEW HERE
