San Mateo County Libraries Kicks Off Annual Food for Fines Program

Library patrons have a chance to clear overdue fines while helping those in need this holiday season. San Mateo County Libraries is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank and the County of San Mateo as well as other libraries across the Peninsula with the Food for Fines program. Running through Dec. 31, Food for Fines eliminates barriers to library access while also assisting those who are struggling to put food on the table. Last year, participating libraries collected a total of 36,531 pounds of food partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank who distributes more than 65 million pounds of food to low-income people annually in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. LEARN MORE

San Mateo County Veterans Commission Honors Veteran of the Year

At the Veteran of the Year luncheon on Nov. 8, 2018, the San Mateo County Veterans Commission honored two individuals and the organization LifeMoves for their notable commitment and significant effort to improve the quality of life for those who served our country. The third annual ceremony included a keynote speech by retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Jan C.Huly. Following Huly’s remarks, the 2018 honorees — Enterprise of the Year, LifeMoves; Patriot of the Year, Brenda Ternullo; and Veteran of the Year, Phyllis Jacquay — were awarded. LEARN MORE

San Mateo Superior Court Restores Clerk's Office Hours

As of Nov. 5, 2018,  the San Mateo County Superior Court has restored formerly shortened counter and phone hours in the court clerk’s offices, jury office and records division. The restoration of public service hours is attributed to the addition of significant funding in the budget for the state’s trial courts to restore and enhance court services. Presiding Judge Susan Irene Etezadi said the Court was fortunate to receive enough funding in the FY18-19 state budget to be able to restore its public hours back to normal, and expand access to the public. LEARN MORE

County of San Mateo Maintains High Credit Ratings

The County of San Mateo has maintained its outstanding credit rating from two agencies — designations which ultimately mean future savings on planned capital projects to improve safety and efficiency for the community. The high ratings enable the County to borrow at the lowest possible interest rates when financing major capital improvement projects. LEARN MORE

Health Fair Partners With Local Health and Wellness Organizations, Offers Free Flu Shots and More

The Healthy Living, Healthy Lives Health Fair on Nov. 10, 2018, will be held at the Serramonte Mall in Daly City from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hosted by Supervisor David Canepa and local health and wellness organizations, the event will offer free screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure and hepatitis B as well as free flu shots. The County's CalFresh outreach team will also be there with healthy snacks and information about food assistance programs. LEARN MORE
