Q: What's the difference between Quarantine and Isolation? Does anything change if I'm fully vaccinated?
Quarantine is for people who have had close contact with someone who has COVID-19. These individuals have been exposed to the virus and may become infected, even if they do not have symptoms yet. There are two ways to end quarantine:
- Quarantine can end after day 10 from the date of last exposure if you do not get tested
- Quarantine can end after day 7 if you get tested after day 5 and the test comes back with a negative result
After quarantine ends, you should keep practicing safe behaviors (wearing a mask, washing your hands, avoiding crowds, etc.) and continue to monitor yourself for symptoms until 14 days have passed since your exposure. If you ever start to have symptoms, start isolating.
If you're fully vaccinated, you don't need to quarantine but do need to monitor yourself for symptoms and wear a mask when in public for 14 days after the last exposure.
Isolation is for people who have tested positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms of COVID-19 and have not yet been tested. You can end isolation only when these conditions are true:
You had symptoms:
- 10 days have passed since symptoms started AND
- 24 hours have passed since you've had a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicines AND
- Your other symptoms have improved
If you don't have symptoms: you may end isolation 10 days after the date of your first positive test.
You still have to isolate, even if you are fully vaccinated.
