COALITION UPDATES

Next Meeting: 📅 Wednesday, June 26th *in-person* 🕒 3pm-4pm

We are so excited to host our annual in-person summer meetup! To register, please click here or scan the QR code above.

Please let us know what address to send your parking pass to by Friday, June 14th so that we can be sure it gets mailed to you on time. We’ll also have Public Health staff near the front who can hand you a free parking permit on the day of the event, but the process will be smoother if you've got your parking pass ahead of time!

POLICY & ADVOCACY SUBCOMMITTEE

Next Meeting: 📅 Tuesday, June 18th 🕒 3pm-4pm

The Policy & Advocacy Subcommittee will be meeting on Tuesday, June 18th to discuss the Coalition’s Priority Setting Session “top priority” policies! The group will be revisiting previously developed Midwest Academy Strategy Charts and reviewing updates to the Decision Maker Matrix for the cities of Milpitas, Santa Clara, and San Jose.

A final meeting agenda and invite will go out next week!

Additionally, on May 14, San Jose became the first city in our County to take action on intoxicating hemp.  City staff will return in late 2024 with a proposed conditional use permit for smoke shops and vape shops that will regulate the sale of these products.  We are also seeing other cities start to express concern about these products, and an interest in potential policy solutions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Santa Clara County Office of Education Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Program is recruiting for the Peer Advocate Advisory Council (PAAC) for the 2024-2025 school year. 

The Peer Advocate Advisory Council (PAAC) is made up of 20 student advocates who are passionate about leading tobacco and cannabis prevention work in Santa Clara County. 

This opportunity is open to all students in Santa Clara County public and charter schools including youth with non-traditional leadership skills as well as youth with lived experience.  This opportunity is for 9th-12th grade students including incoming Freshmen in the 2024-2025 school year. SECONDHAND SMOKE CONCERNS

Are you experiencing secondhand smoke exposure? If so, try these tips:

• Try politely talking with whomever is smoking about the secondhand smoke and see if you can reach an agreement about how to address the problem.
• Determine if your lease or Homeowners Association (HOA) policy includes a smoke-free policy. 
• Contact your property manager or HOA about the secondhand smoke.
• Keep track of how frequently you are experiencing secondhand smoke. This can be helpful information for property managers or anyone else responsible for responding to the problem.
• Chat with your neighbors to see if anyone else is experiencing the same problem. It can be helpful to work together to identify solutions for your community.
