Dear Neighbors,
Public Health recently published new data on disparate health outcomes for African/African ancestry mothers and babies. The data highlight efforts by the County to close these gaps in the community. This is not just a Santa Clara County problem, but a nationwide problem. African Ancestry families experience the highest rates of infant mortality, preterm birth, and severe maternal morbidity, among several other serious conditions and outcomes.
The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department works with partners to address the root cause of these inequities and to create a village to wrap around expectant and new moms.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have been found in East San Jose. This mosquito is of concern because it has the potential to spread diseases, like Zika, dengue, and yellow fever.
To protect yourself and others, drain, remove, or turn over anything that can hold water. These mosquitoes can breed in a capful of water.
Residents experiencing mosquito bites during the day should report them to the Vector Control District at (408) 918-4770 or vectorinfo@cep.sccgov.org.

The White House is delaying action to ban menthol cigarettes. This comes after Black leaders in Santa Clara County urged the federal government to take action. Prohibiting menthol cigarettes nationwide will save lives, while further delay will continue to cost lives, particularly Black lives. Learn more about what you can do at savingblacklives.org.
The Public Health Department will be at the Family Health and Wellness Resource Fair in Morgan Hill. The fair hosts resources for people who are interested in taking steps towards a healthier lifestyle. There are performances, food and beverages, fitness activities, and more.
