June: Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month
The chance of developing dementia increases with age. People can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) by making lifestyle choices to stay sharp at any age. Keep in mind, dementia is not a normal part of aging.
Some people are at higher risk of developing ADRD, including women and people of color. Older African Americans and Hispanics/Latinx are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to have ADRD than Caucasians. Regardless of race, women have almost double the chance of being affected by Alzheimer’s disease than men.
There are proactive steps you can take to keep your brain healthy! Follow these six healthy habits today to take control of your brain health. It’s never too late or too early to start a healthy lifestyle.
SUN Bucks:
A New Summer Food Program for Kids!
 What is SUN Bucks?
SUN Bucks is a brand-new Summer EBT grocery benefit program for low-income children. It will provide $120 for the summer for eligible children.
Who is eligible?
Low-income children in households receiving CalFresh, CalWorks, MediCal or otherwise eligible for Direct Certification are automatically eligible. Or families can complete the Free and Reduced Price Meal Form/Alternative Income Forms at school to determine if they are income eligible.
Quick FAQ:
- Yes, immigrants are eligible and no it will not cause someone to become a public charge!
- Yes, students attending CEP schools still must certify their income for eligibility! This is NOT like Pandemic EBT!
- Action: Please encourage your student populations to complete the income forms and make sure their address is correct!
When will SUN Bucks be sent?
The first wave of card mailings will begin in June and continue through the summer. Cards will be issued in the child’s name and sent alphabetically, so households with multiple children may receive them at different times. Students can continue completing the FRPM/Alt Income forms through August 30th and still be eligible. Their cards will be mailed shortly after their eligibility is determined.

Raw Milk and Raw Dairy Products
Unfortunately, some people are choosing to drink raw milk. Raw milk—and products made from it—can make you and your loved ones sick. Raw milk has not undergone a process called pasteurization that kills disease-causing germs.
Pasteurized milk is a safe and healthy food. When milk pasteurization began in the early 1900s, deaths and diarrheal illnesses in young children declined dramatically

June Themes
Hello, Summer! June is National Dairy Month. Dairy consumption helps your bones and teeth stay strong. Check out the tips below for more information on getting enough dairy throughout your day. June is also a great month to improve your health through strength training, which helps both your bones and muscles. Using EatFresh.org, you can also find great recipes using June’s Harvest of the Month, Peaches.
Nutrition: Got Your Dairy Today?
The Dairy Group includes milk, yogurt, cheese, and fortified milk alternatives. They provide calcium, vitamin D, potassium, protein, and other nutrients needed for good health throughout life. Choices should be low-fat or fat-free – to cut calories and saturated fat. How much is needed? Older children, teens, and adults need 3 cups a day, while children 4 to 8 years old need 2 ½ cups, and children 2 to 3 years old need 2 cups.
Harvest of the Month: Peaches
A ½ cup of peaches has vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber. Eat the skin! The skin of this fruit contains fiber and many important vitamins.
Physical Activity: Strength Training
Strength training activities make your muscles do more work than usual and help to make your bones and muscles stronger. Adults should do strengthening activities at least two days per week, and children and adolescents at least three days per week.
